Canada: Population 100 Million by 2050

Canada: Population 100 Million by 2050

What will determine the wealth (hence influence) of a country or a nation in the 21st century?

World is Changing?

The liberal World Order, an integrated supply chain where money and goods can travel freely across national boundaries, was the mantra for the last 30 years, starting with Reaganomics, Thatcherism, Deregulation, EU, and WTO. But, unfortunately, the protectionist winds prevailed in the previous decade, strengthened by the Covid pandemic and boisterous muscle flexing by BRIC and other advancing economies. As a result, countries with resources, population, and vibrant production and consumption capabilities will once again control the narrative of what constitutes human progress.??

So what can a country like Canada, with its vast land mass, rich in resources, and sparse population, do to maintain its traditional role of "Peace Keeper/Enabler" without pursuing "American exceptionalism through the barrel of another 6th fleet" in this new world order? One response - we will need a solid economic base, and for that, we will need a hard-working, savvy population of at least 100 million by 2050.?

So what should we focus on?

  • Ask Canadians to have more children?
  • Build better around our Indigenous Communities?
  • ?Immigration - that raises additional questions?- whom to allow? how to attract the people we want??how to help the new immigrants???The cost of settling new immigrants, etc.?
  • We will need 20 more cities size of GTA (Greater Toronto Area), connected via high-speed transportation and digital networks.

Our Past and Possible Future?

  • Our last call to increase population in 1800 - authorities invited European men (no issues with this as invitees were European too), gave them a 100-acre parcel of land, a shovel, an axe, and enough food to survive the first winter, and said good luck. Not only these people survived they built a country (yes, with flaws)
  • Once again, perhaps we need to make the same call with a difference - this call is to the world, we don't have 100 care land to give away, but we do have - a lot of open space, excellent education, and healthcare systems, access to best technologies and the ability for multi nations to work together.???

Engagement Question

What should we focus on??

Jason, interesting article. The answer to your engagement question, at least from my perspective, is good governance. I am an immigrant, I was lucky to start working two weeks after landing in Canada, paid taxes a month later and got a medal for representing Canada at International venues three years later. However, what I have learned throughout my adult life is that one needs to know well what one's core values are and build teams (bring in, cooperate with, accept for residency and citizenship) based on an overlap of those core values( I am using the term "overlap" versus sharing or educating to stress the fact that the core values have to be already there, not implanted or faked). A nation can be seen as a team assigned to build a healthy socio-economic community and when assembling a good team (effective in its enterprise) it is the quality of the members (the true overlap of core values) that matters more than quantity. The apriori ingredient for success is leadership, the quality of the governance methodology behind that team's enterprise. Good leadership and governance build good teams, maximizing the probability of success. Hence governance gets the top spot.
