What Is the Minimum Wage in Canada?

Minimum wage refers to the lowest hourly rate employers must legally pay their employees. In Canada, minimum wages are categorized into two types:

  • Federal Minimum Wage: This applies to federally regulated sectors, such as banking, transportation, and postal services. It is adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
  • Provincial/Territorial Minimum Wages: These are determined by individual provinces or territories for employees within their jurisdiction. Rates vary depending on regional policies, cost of living, and inflation.


Key Minimum Wage Updates in 2025

Starting in April 2025, workers in federally regulated sectors will see the minimum wage rise to $17.30. Provinces such as Yukon, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick are also set to increase their minimum wages on the same date. Later in the year, other regions, including British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, will implement their respective adjustments. Nunavut continues to lead with the highest minimum wage in Canada at $19.00, though the date for its next adjustment is yet to be announced.

  • New Brunswick: $15.30 (Effective April 1, 2025)
