From the heart of #COP29,?the Rainforest Alliance?delegation has been?driving conversations?on the role of locally led, nature-based solutions and the importance of financing them at scale. ???Here are the highlights: ? ?????At our official side event, “Empowering Farmers: Access to Finance and Innovation for Climate Adaptation and Resilience”—in partnership with World Farmers' Organisation and the U.S. Dairy Export Council—our Senior Manager of Public Affairs and Advocacy, Duncan Williamson, discussed the importance of certification schemes and their role in supporting farmers to implement climate-smart agriculture practices at scale. ? ???Our Climate Director, Celia A. Harvey, joined an event hosted by the World Climate Foundation titled “Protecting Forests, Preserving Climate – Strategies for Sustainable Land use and Forest Conservation.” In this session, Celia spoke about the importance of supporting local farming and forest communities to implement nature-based solutions, and how local communities at the forefront of climate change must be invested in and supported to effectively deliver impact at scale.? ? ???Celia also joined the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the High-Level Climate Champions, and the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action - Land Use Action Group for?the?“Transforming Land and ecosystems for a Nature-positive 2030”?event.?She emphasized the need for increased financing for farmers and forest communities to adopt better land management practices, the critical role of governments in creating supportive policy environments for nature-based solutions, and the importance of diverse, inclusive coalitions collaborating to champion these initiatives. The message is clear:?Increasing financing for nature-based solutions?is essential for effective climate adaptation and mitigation. On #WorldChildrensDay, we're inspired by the Indigenous women who are preserving and nurturing their Kichwa cultural identity between generations in Peru. ???? A collective of Kichwa women from five local communities formed Warmi Awadora, a brand of textiles woven from cotton cultivated in harmony with their forests. Their vibrant creations—bracelets, earrings, bags, and more—are not only beautiful, but also support their families and preserve ancestral knowledge. ?? Fifteen young girls participated in "Weaving Knowledge" workshops, or "Tejiendo Saberes" in Spanish, in which older members of Warmi Awadora taught them ancestral techniques and Indigenous symbolism that their textile creations represent. ?? The Rainforest Alliance partners with these women to build their entrepreneurial skills, helping to boost incomes and support economic growth, while preserving their cultural identity and passing it on to future generations. ?? The Rainforest Alliance deeply regrets the adoption in plenary today of some of the amendments tabled by the European People's Party on the Commission’s proposal, that initially only aimed at postponing the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by 12 months. ???? ???????????????????? ?????? ???????????????? ???? ?? ‘????-????????’ ???????????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????????????????? ????????????, ???????????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???????? ???????? ???? ?????? ???????? ????????????????????????, ?????????? ???????????????????? ?????????? ???????? ?? ?????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????? ????????. The discriminative approach it implies between producing countries and related potential disputes is a huge risk just to please some European industry sectors. By twisting the arm of EU institutions to get back into trilogues about a month and a half ahead of the start of the implementation of the EUDR, it also generates immense uncertainty for companies in scope. This chaos only benefits laggards and ignores all the efforts put in place by companies in the past years to deliver on the EUDR objectives. It’s also creating diversion on the real objective we should all have in mind: tackling global deforestation and meeting our global sustainability objectives.? We urge EU decision-makers not to take operators hostages of vain political battles, by focusing on the Commission’s initial proposal for a 12-month postponement. We commend market partners for sharing the right message with EU decision makers ahead of today’s vote and remain committed by their side to ensure swift implementation of the EUDR.?? Last month, the Rainforest Alliance's Japan team attended the World Specialty Coffee Conference and Exhibition (#SCAJ2024)—one of the leading specialty coffee events in Asia! ? We were honored to host an insightful seminar in partnership with UCC Ueshima Coffee Japan, a long-standing member of the Rainforest Alliance certified supply chain. Together, we explored the history and challenges of sustainable coffee production and discussed efforts to protect forests and improve farmers' livelihoods around the world. ?? Key highlights from the event: ?? Our Key Account and Marketing Manager in Japan, Chieko Ichikura, shared how our certification program meets market needs, our role in helping farmers transition to #RegenerativeAgriculture, and our climate change strategy. ?? Special guest Eko from Klasik Beans Cooperative shared a recorded message on regenerative agriculture in coffee production in West Java, Indonesia, illustrating what this approach looks like and how it benefits local communities and their connection to nature. ?? UCC Ueshima Coffee shared their Nature Positive strategy, Zero Deforestation Declaration, and collaboration with key players, including the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and Marubeni Corporation.
