Here are eight specific things you can do within your organization to develop an environment where employees feel valued and will make the most valuable contributions.
- Ensure that staff at all levels understand how what they do contributes to the success of the organization. Greatness is achieved by outstanding work throughout, from bottom to top.
- Give your staff flexibility to reach objectives in a different way than you envisioned - trust in the ingenuity and creativity of others.
- Provide opportunities for personal and professional growth - we understand the importance of a well trained staff, but don't discount the importance of having them know you are looking out for their best interests.
- Promote employee collaboration - teamwork is an important part of the work environment with a reward system that encourages interdependence.
- Be a good listener - your employees will feel respected and you may learn something.
- Involve employees in decisions - by keeping others on your team informed and engaged, you will gain insights and create better solutions.
- Make sure you thank people who contributed to success and do it personally. Doesn't it feel so much better and more genuine when you are recognized for specific accomplishments? It's much better than, "thanks to all who helped out."
- Surround yourself with a great team and trust them to do their job.
