New groundbreaking developments are constantly being made in the world of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) undoubtedly has the potential to revolutionize various fields, but it also brings forth significant challenges and risks.?
One of the concerning aspects is the spread of fake news through AI. We are already witness to fake news spread across the internet. What if artificial intelligence is mixed into the web of fake news?
If we don't understand this technology fast, then it will be a guaranteed failure on our side. With the advancement of AI technology, it becomes easier and quicker to generate fake news, making it increasingly difficult for people to distinguish between truth and falsehood. It took effort to construct fake news before, but with AI it can be done in minutes on the phone.
It will become increasingly difficult to distinguish between truth and fake as AI is used in dangerous ways. Fake news is not a recent thing. During the power battle for the throne between Caesar's adopted son Octavian and general Mark Antony , Octavian used a strategy that is still used today: disseminating harmful rumors. To discredit Antony, Octavian spread rumors that he was having an affair with Egyptian queen Cleopatra and was a drinker. This message was cleverly delivered through a poem, and Octavian eventually triumphed, controlling Rome for four decades. This historical example demonstrates the pervasiveness of political manipulation through disinformation while also reflecting the developing nature of false news in modern times.
What if Osama bin Laden appears in a video admitting his mistakes? In 2018, Jordan Peele made an Obama video demonstrating the powers of AI!
The voice on the other end seems legit and people are generally gullible in these scenarios like we are prone to believe in promises and fears. What if AI is also used for politics? What if there were an audio or video that provoked you? Will you be able to think logically? Believe it or not, but it can happen, and AI will change the meaning of the saying.
To make a copy of your voice, AI needs just a sample of 3 seconds. People in public spaces, especially those making videos can easily be the target scamsters who can mimic the voice and execute their plan of defaming you, trapping you in a fraud, etc. In China, AI was used to impersonate a friend of the victim on a video call to receive $622,000.
AI has become a boon for scammers. They can manipulate audio, video, or both. Here are apps that can be used to change the expression on the face in a few clicks and this is only the basic use of AI. The same was used in India on the protesting wrestlers. After getting detained their happy photo went viral.?
Everyone thought it was all a drama of getting detained. But later it came to be known that their actual expression was different. It came to light because the app lacks mimicking real teeth. All the wrestlers had the same smile, and it could be caught with a close inspection. It takes 43 muscles to smile but here an edited photo made us believe that wrestlers were doing drama protesting.?
Fake narrative rapidly spread across the internet and the general public do not have time to verify if it's real. So, it's easy to have them fooled. It is unfortunate to the people who circulated that the picture was not tracked and there was no punishment.
In Russia Ukraine war also, deepfake videos made the news. There was a video of Zelensky in which he was ready to surrender . Later it was found to be a fake video, but it had been broadcast live by a channel, which clarified it was hacked.
AI is now being used to make deepfake adult content widely. Earlier, the vindictive guys would make the girl's phone number public after the breakup. Now with this technology in hand, deep fakes may be used for character assassination in public. By the way, one need not be an engineer or study for hours to make these contents, apps do it all for you.
Deepfake videos have been made on celebrities, but it can also happen to anyone by stealing data from online presence. Deep fake technology studies face and facial expressions using machine learning. Facial features are converted into data like space between nose and lips, how frequently one blinks, wrinkles and curves, etc.
Adult content from popular influencer Addison Rae just went viral on twitter. It received a whopping 21 million views.?
The video, however, generated outrage since it featured Rae in a sexual stance on a bed. To make matters worse, the photo uploaded on Twitter depicted Rae's face superimposed on the body of another woman.
Following that, other accounts distributing explicit deepfake content using celebrities were uncovered and removed—though, notably, explicit deepfake content starring Charli D'Amelio remained undeleted. Unfortunately, this is not a unique event, as notable Hollywood celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Emma Watson, and Scarlett Johansson have also been victims of this frightening practice.
The program evolves through deep analysis and understands all kinds of facial expressions: joy, fear, etc. All that computing power is now in the palm of our hands in simple terms, just like you can tell emotion by the emojis: happy, sad, angry, etc. AI does the same thing with the face right now; deep fake expressions are quite similar and can be identified. AI is limited in its ability. Social media platforms can identify deep fakes as of now. But improvements in technology keep happening.
ChatGPT and Google Bard made AI quite popular. People use it for poetry, essays and even coding. Snapchat took AI to the next level. Recently they introduced MyAI feature on Snapchat .?
MyAI will have all the information on you and with that information, the app will create an online avatar. You can also talk to the bot and ask questions. MyAI can answer a burning trivia question, offer advice on the perfect gift for your BFF's birthday, help plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, or suggest what to make for dinner. But the problem is, it is hard to differentiate between real and virtual worlds. 1.1% of children aged 10-14 years and 2.8% of 15-19-year-olds are suffering from depression.
The bots are making social media accounts - becoming virtual public figures and thus making influence. They can make any claim, such as weakening takas against the dollar is a good thing. Weakening taka will help exporters as they will get more prices.
WhatsApp forwards fake news are becoming and spreading fast. What if AI enters the picture? It was recently reported by top channels that an explosion occurred at the Pentagon . But it was AI-generated fake news.?
When we are talking about AI, the first country I’m sure that the first country will come to everyone’s mind is China. China is super active in artificial intelligence. I don’t know which country is broadly used AI like China. It spends approximately $456 billion on R&D every year. As of 2021, nearly one-fifth of the global private investment funding went to AI start-ups in China, attracting $17 billion.
China has been developing AI since the 1980s when maximum countries don’t even see computers. China established the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI). In 2006 they kept a roadmap ready for the next 15 years. China has an ambitious target to get AI technology output to $150 billion by 2030 .?
Baidu is China's Google. Baidu has made an LLM-like ChatGPT named Ernie Bot . As the AI race heats up, Baidu claims
Ernie Bot will beat ChatGPT.
As of March 2019, China had 1,189 AI firms, second only to the United States, which has over 2,000 active AI firms . These companies are more focused on voice (e.g., speech recognition, speech synthesis) and vision (e.g., image recognition, video recognition) than their counterparts in other countries.

The impact of AI on society, including the job market, is a topic of concern. AI has the potential to automate various tasks and replace certain job roles, leading to job losses. Entry-level jobs are particularly vulnerable to AI automation, and even white-collar jobs and creative professions may not be immune in the long run. This calls for individuals to adapt and acquire new skills to remain relevant in the evolving job market.
But is AI dangerous? The discussion stops at how AI is eating our jobs This is like asking did bullock cart drivers get jobless when cars came. The people who didn't learn how to drive cars became jobless. Jobs were replaced. And the skills required to do those jobs were replaced If the Industrial Revolution destroyed 1,00,000 old jobs. It created 1,00,000 new jobs as well. But replacing jobs is not the only danger of AI.
According to research firm HSRC, the?global market for deepfake detection ?was valued at $3.86 billion in 2020 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 42% through 2026.
Self-driving cars have become a reality in today's world. Perhaps you've come across online videos showcasing smart cars like Tesla zooming at 100mph on the highway, while the driver remains unfazed and need not pay attention to the road. With AI taking over the decision-making process, the responsibilities once shouldered by drivers have now shifted.
Now, let's imagine a scenario: a self-driving car is cruising on the highway when suddenly, two children dart onto the road in pursuit of their ball. There is only one option to save the children's lives—swiftly veering the car to the opposite side of the road. However, there's a potential obstacle: a truck approaching from that direction. Colliding with the truck would prove fatal for the car's occupant. In this critical situation, what should AI do?
This was called the Trolley problem in 1967 by philosopher Philippa Foot.
Now you'll think what's the difference between AI and the human driver? The difference is responsibility. If the driver was driving the car, he himself would be responsible for what happened but what should AI do? Most importantly, who will decide what AI should do? Is it the engineer who made the AI? Is it the company that owns the AI? The Government of the country where the AI is operating? Or the person who paid money to buy the AI-driven car? Here is the big question??? This is a big question and we have not found an answer to this yet. This is just one ethical dilemma.
Meet the world's first living robot, a 1-millimeter-sized creature. What distinguishes this robot is its extraordinary capacity to self-replicate . The Xenobot , which looks like a Pacman, hunts out stem cells in its surroundings and devours them with its mouth. New xenobots are born every few days. Originally created for medical applications, these robots can now be used with the help of AI to precisely deliver medicine to the required places within our bodies. They can also be deployed in our oceans to combat microplastic contamination, thereby cleaning up our marine ecosystems. However, it is critical to recognize that if this technology is abused, it might be utilized to construct powerful weaponry.
During Covid, we saw how a virus could pause the world and how it could break supply chains. How it can destroy economies. If AI is used for biological warfare targeted viruses can attack specific people, it’s possible a country can develop a virus that can eliminate only one race. They can build robots to destroy the enemy's military infrastructure.
In 2017, Google's Alpha Zero defeated Stockfish 8. Stockfish 8 is special because it has a database of all the chess games ever played. It has all the chess moves ready. It can calculate 70 million chess positions in a second. And Alpha Zero? Alpha Zero could only calculate 80,000 moves. But Alpha Zero made use of machine learning. If we put it in simple language Alpha Zero kept playing games with itself and it kept learning by playing against itself. Alpha Zero played 100 game s with Stockandh 8. Alpha Zero won 28 games!!!?
The game was drawn 72 times. But Alpha Zero did not lose. Can you guess how much time it took for Alpha Zero to go from nothing to a chess champion? To go from understanding chess moves to becoming the chess champion how much time did Alpha Zero take? It took Alpha Zero only 4 hours! That's the power of machine learning and that's the power of AI.
Elon Musk said AI is far more dangerous than nuclear bombs.
It is crucial to have regulations and guidelines in place to address the risks associated with AI. We need robot laws. If you have read Isaac Asimov novels . He had made 3 rules for robots. I think we need to apply today the 3 rules:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law..
Governments and organizations need to work together to develop ethical frameworks, standards, and laws to ensure the responsible development and use of AI technology. Initiatives like the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act are steps in the right direction, aiming to establish rules and standards for trustworthy AI.
When computers were launched similar negativity was around. But ultimately computers helped. It created millions of jobs. But at that time Bill Gates or IBM did not warn against buying computers. On the other hand, the pioneers of AI are warning about its dangers.?Recently Dr. Hinton , who is the godfather of AI said he has quit his job at Google , where he has worked for more than a decade and become one of the most respected voices in the field, so he can freely speak out about the risks of A.I. A part of him, he said,
Now regrets his life's work.
I am definitely not against AI and in fact, it is good to upgrade with changing times. At the same time, AI is also a double-edged sword. Social media platforms need to implement measures to instantly recognize AI-generated content.
While AI has enormous potential for growth and creativity, its research and implementation must be approached with prudence and accountability. To design a future that benefits everyone, society must stay aware, educate themselves about AI, and actively participate in discussions about its influence.
AI has the potential to transform many parts of our life, but it also brings substantial problems and threats. We must proceed with care and prudence as we approach this disruptive technology. To maximize the benefits of AI while reducing its negative impact, it is critical to balance innovation with responsible research, robust regulation, and ethical considerations. Only in this way can we ensure that AI works in the best interests of humanity and contributes to a more equal and prosperous future.
