CAN YOU UNPLUG FROM WORK?

The weekend is almost here. For some, that means unplugging from work for the entire weekend. For others, it is more difficult to resist the pull of your inbox even during non-work hours.

?? ?????? ??????, ?????????????????? ???? your stage in life (like age,) the role your career plays in your life, and your company’s culture, you approach work-life as either a segmentor or an integrator. Degree of extremity on the scale, varies.

A manager who knows their team members' work-life balance personality can more effectively influence performance and their team's ability to SMASH goals.

?????????????? ???? ???????? ?? ???? ?? ?? ???????? ???????????? on work-life-balance personalities. We will understand the 2 personality types and discuss how managers can leverage this awareness to influence their team's engagement and productivity.

Research by Christine Nippert-Eng shows that people use one of two strategies to manage work and non-work roles.

1?? ???????????????????? – “Are employees who create rigid boundaries between their personal and work lives. They reported, ‘in my work there is a clear boundary between my career and non-work roles.”

????????????????????:

  ?? Have well defined times when ‘they are working’ and when ‘they are done for the day.'

  ?? Tend to errands and other personal activities outside of working hours

  ?? Typically won’t discuss their personal life at work, or their work life with their friends and family.

  ?? Find it easy to mentally and physically detach from work.

 

2?? ?????????????????????? – “Are employees who blur the work and home, switching back and forth between the two. This group often agreed that, “It is often difficult to tell where my work life ends and my non work life begins.”

??????????????????????:

  ?? Jump in and out of work throughout the day. For example, they will leave work early to go and pick up their kids from school or to run an errand, and then return to continue with their work.

  ?? Don’t mind answering emails after hours, even at night and on weekends.

  ?? Like to talk about work outside of work and are happy to chat about their personal lives with their colleagues

  ?? Find it harder to mentally and physically detach from and shut work off. Over half the integrators wish they could segment work and life more.

?? ???????? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????? ???? ???????????????? ???? ?????? ??????????. They are simply different approaches to work and both can go into the extreme. For example the extreme integrator can burn out while the extreme segmentor can stunt their career growth because of their rigidity and “difficultness to work with.”
