Can You Spot the Difference? Public Relations & Marketing

Emerging Markets: PR versus Marketing??

Two rapidly changing parts of the business world are marketing and public relations. These two departments are an essential part of making an organization run successfully. But most people don’t actually know what makes these two departments and industries so different. Can you tell the difference??

Marketing is an activity a business or individual engages in to promote and sell a product or brand to a targeted audience. This is generally a one-way communication method that a company or individual will inform or entice an audience. There is no direct or quick response within this communication type.?

In contrast, public relations (PR) is a strategic two-way communication process in which a grouping or individual public relations professional manages an organization’s public?reputation.

It is about influencing, engaging, and building a relationship with the public that will frame public perception of an organization.?

Measuring PR

Public relations also has metrics but they are somewhat different than marketing key metrics:

  1. Media Impressions -Calculation that shows the number of people who have heard of a company whether it is through word of mouth, a marketing campaign, or other method. This is usually measured on a periodic basis.?
  2. Audience Engagement -?This can be seen through two way communication such as social media outlets. This is an instant feedback method that allows audiences to share how they feel about a specific campaign.

To sum up, public relations and marketing have different functions but they are both very important to understand. Public relations deals with the management of? consumer or public views on a company. Public relations professionals deal with instances of negative events to maintain a positive outlook on the image of a company. Marketing is more of a one sided communication. It is rapidly changing to encompass more analytical and transparent aspects. Marketing deals with the portrayal of a brand or image for the purpose of having the viewer or consumer complete a specific action. This can be either to be directed to a specific page to complete a purchase, engage with a post or account or to fulfill some other action or feeling.?

The future of public relations and marketing is rapidly evolving and encompasses very different techniques, outlets, and metrics from those of the past. There are so many subsectors of each industry. They are involved in processes you might not even recognize. But they are both aspects that a business could not be successful without. Did you know all of the aspects of marketing and PR and were you able to spot the difference??
