Can you see beneath the surface?

Can you see beneath the surface?

I cannot begin to tell you how many times I wish I knew more about myself, and, knew more about my teammates. At work, we're all so busy, it seems like we just don't have enough time to get to know each other - well, we've at least had time during lunches, celebration dinners, company parties, and the like ... then, COVID-19 hit ... now what?

There's this classic graphic lots of finance or management articles use to depict "what we don't see". You know it, you love it, it's the iceberg.

When it comes to the fear of the unknown, an iceberg in your path out in the open ocean floods your imagination with all sorts of terrible outcomes.

You can see the enormity of the iceberg, at the surface, but in the end it's what's beneath the surface you wish you could see - not to mention the reflection on the surface hides even more danger than you'd like to admit!

Now, take an iceberg, the depth you cannot see, obscured by the reflection on the surface, and apply that to what it's like working with others. The questions that flood my imagination are:

  • How well do you truly know yourself?
  • How well do you know your co-workers?
  • How well do you know your manager?
  • Can you see the breadth, and the depth, of your team?
  • Are you able to form an accurate picture of the entire company?
  • Is what you see, and know, just a reflection on the surface?

How does this particular iceberg look to you now? Yep, beads of sweat are starting to form on my brow, let me tell you! However, if you truly think about it, this iceberg provides us all with the perfect opportunity.

Each of us should take time to look deeper than we ever did before into ourselves and those with whom we spend lots of waking hours talking, solving problems, and achieving great things. We need to understand, top-to-bottom and side-to-side, the iceberg that is ourselves and our co-workers. Quite honestly, it's the people that matter more than the bottom line because we all ARE the bottom line.

Let's take the first step together. Jobsurv can help you to know yourself better.
