Can You Really Plan Your Career?
Many people know #RobinLewis as the cofounder of #MyMizu and Social Innovation Japan. Robin also shares his career advice freely with many young people in his university talks. I was fortunate to include some of his advice in my recent book, NO Regrets: How To Kickstart Your Career and Your Life now available on Amazon worldwide.
Here are some of Robin's thoughts about his own career:
Robin tells me that being confident and opportunistic has been instrumental in launching him on this career path. He never doubted himself. He also didn’t plan things out. According to Robin, he had never planned to take this path, but every time there was an opportunity he took it. He told me, “I feel extremely fortunate that I care passionately about my work—I see it as my ‘life work’, not my ‘job’.”
Robin's career changed after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The Earthquake was the trigger that propelled him on this path. The earthquake and all of the devastation had a very personal connection for him. His mother’s family was originally from the area that was devastated by the earthquake.
In 2019, he started his own social enterprise, My Mizu, which blends both his purpose and his business background. My Mizu[www.mymizu.co] tackles the plastics crisis in the world by providing an app, a refillable bottle, and access to a network of locations that provides water. My Mizu’s mission is for you to never buy another plastic bottle of water again. Users save money and you do not contribute to problems associated with the production, consumption, and disposal of plastic.
Most recently My Mizu was one of the winners of the United Nations Development Program’s Social Innovation Challenge.
