Can you really control the evolution of AI (inc Chat GPT)?
I don’t think so. Controlling an any self-trained self-propelled transformer is not possible. You can try and regulate the scope of evolution only to a small degree to minimise the negative impact on humankind. But if the positives are going to outnumber the negatives, AI technology is bound to grown exponentially.
I really don’t understand why Elon Musk proposes a pause of further training of AI systems more powerful than GPT 4 when he is one of the industry pioneers with Tesla self-driving cars and fought against accountability for defective AI in his self-driving cars. He should be the one helping to fine tune and test the models with real data and help build reliable and safe systems using AI.
The European Union (EU) is proposing strict rules for artificial intelligence (AI) and companies providing AI in high-risk areas must provide regulators with proof of its safety, including risk assessments and documentation explaining how the technology is making decisions. They have been debating over this for last couple of years and will continue to do so for next couple of years. By that time, AI (not just Chat GPT) would have gone to a different extent and the current set of regulations would have lost their cause anyhow.
I believe the need of the hour is:

1. Business and Consumer - To embrace new AI technology and GPT and apply to business and consumer use cases to generate better outcomes. Although everyone is talking of AI and Chat GPT but the number of people who really understand its application are a handful. This is not just a job for technologists but for operations, support staff, customer service representatives and organisation leaders.?Business users need not fear it but come together with tech guys to identify and optimise their work through use of AI.
2. Industry - Business and Tech industry should come together to agree on principles for its development and evolution. All industry forums should include this as part of their agenda and work jointly. MSFT, Google and others already have a set of their own development principles. If we can make them as industry standards and principles, that would help a long-term cause.
3. Government - Government regulations should only provide a development framework to avoid risk to human lives and society, but support development of AI driven systems. They would then eventually help to remove the social ills like poverty, lack of infrastructure etc and enable worldly benefits like food production, power distribution, inter country collaboration, economic forecasting etc. Global upliftment using AI should be part of agenda for G7s and G20s of the world and should not be looked as a threat but as an opportunity.
4. Individual - Not necessary that everyone has the same level of understanding of AI and Chat GPT even when most of us are daily consumers of it using it on our smart phones, streaming movies, travelling on trains & planes, studying on tablets etc. We need not be worried about it but be a bit more informed and educated so that we can use it further to fulfil our shortcomings and achieve our goals in life.
This is not a hard argument from me but my point of view since I have been working with AI for last couple of years and suddenly seen a surge on the debate for and against the use of AI and esp. Chat GPT. I welcome views from everyone.??
