I can’t believe what I have recently read:
- 29% of American adults above the age of 16 can only read at an eighth grade level. And 14% can only read at or below a fifth grade level.
- 1 in 4 children in the U.S. grow up without learning how to read.
- America is one of the only free-market countries where the current generation is less educated than the prior one.
- Nearly 85% of the juveniles facing trial are functionally illiterate.
- More than 60% of all U.S. inmates are functionally illiterate. Over 70% of America’s inmates cannot read above a 4th grade level.
- 75% of Americans who receive food stamps perform at the lowest 2 levels of literacy.
- 90% of high school dropouts are on welfare.
- Long Beach, CA is our nation’s most illiterate city.
Sadly, this is true...but it does not have to remain that way.

Unfortunately, an emphasis on English grammar, reading, and writing is less-than-emphasized in school. Similarly, many books available to youth appear to be aimed toward lower-level readers, and those same books tend to not be well-written. Hell, even online content is aimed at lower reading levels. We aren't doing much to stymie the potential damage.
