Can You Number the Stars?
People often look into the night sky and are overwhelmed by the vast number of stars and attempting to count them would certainly seem to be a fruitless exercise. In recent years different astrological models have attempted to number the stars located in the Milky Way. However, a majority of astrologers agree that we really don’t know the answer. Of course, there are theoretical estimates which range from a low of 100 billion to a high of 400 billion stars in the Milky Way. Under pristine conditions outside the city limits on a clear and dark night, the human eye according to experts can see somewhere around 5,000 to 10,000 stars. Without question the advancements in human knowledge and technological capabilities are impressive, but the sheer immensity and size of the universe is beyond our capabilities and is truly humbling.
Around 4,000 years ago God had a discussion with Abram that is still relevant today. Speaking to Abram, he said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars – if you are able to number them” (Genesis 15:5). Of course, God knew that Abram could not number the stars any more than we can number them today. Rather, God was revealing Himself to Abram just as He continues to make Himself known to us today. Everday God discloses Himself through His creation; His power is on display ensuring no one is without an excuse (Romans 1:20). Next time you look up into heavens remember there is One who numbers the stars and gives names to all of them (Psalm 147:4).

6 年Everytime I think about this subject it makes me want to worship our great God! Mainly because this universe is so big, and we're so small in comparison, that it astounds me that He cares for us so. Thanks for sharing this Matt!

6 年We serve an awesome God. Every time I look at the night sky and consider where (of if) the universe ends and how many stars there may be, I am immediately humbled. Thanks for posting this, Matt!
