How can you ??‘Measure what Matters’??
Here is a quick book summary of the principles.?
"Measure What Matters" by John Doerr is a practical guide to setting and achieving goals using the Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) framework. Doerr draws on his experience as an early investor in companies such as Google, Intel, and Amazon to illustrate how OKRs can be used to drive growth and innovation in organizations of all sizes. The book provides a step-by-step approach to implementing OKRs, with real-world examples and case studies of companies such as Google, Intuit, and the Gates Foundation. Doerr also emphasizes the importance of alignment and transparency in goal setting and measurement, as well as the need to constantly adapt and refine OKRs to stay on track. "Measure What Matters" is a valuable resource for managers, executives, and anyone seeking to improve their ability to set and achieve meaningful goals.?
?
To train an executive team to use the principles above, consider:?
?
1.??Familiarize the team with the OKR framework and its benefits. This can be done through a presentation or a reading of the book. ?The advantages include: ?improved alignment, increased transparency, and better focus on achieving meaningful outcomes.
?
2.??Identify the company's strategic priorities and set OKRs at the executive level. The executive team should work together to identify the most important areas of focus for the company and set objectives.
?
3.???It's important to cascade the focus down to the rest of the organization so that everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals.
?
4.??Review progress and adjust OKRs regularly. ?This ensures that everyone is staying on track and that the company is making progress towards its strategic priorities.?

Using AI could improve the speed & quality of learning:?
?
?
ChatGPT could be used for training by building a presentation or a learning session on the OKR framework, providing executives with an overview of the key concepts and principles.
?
?ChatGPT could also be used to answer questions or provide guidance on how to set effective OKRs and cascade them down to the rest of the organization.
?
?Finally, ChatGPT could be used to facilitate discussions and brainstorming sessions around setting strategic priorities and goals.

1 年Thanks for this guidance, Steve! #3 is so important. Patrick Lencioni in Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive touches on a similar them about overcommunicating and doing what you can to get all aligned with or at least fully understanding the vision.

1 年Steve Brody #3 ?"It's important to?cascade the focus down?to the rest of the organization so that everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals." is the most critical to me. Often organizations forget to do this or are sloppy with it. Alignment helps us to get to the finish line quickly and minimizes pain.

1 年Steve Brody - since we talked about this a couple of months ago, about how a lot of your business clients weren't really 'getting" Chat GPT or AI capabilities yet - is that changing at all because of ALL the news about Chat GPT? or AI? I think you are the ONLY person I've heard talk about using it to create these perimeters, or OKR, which is very exciting!

1 年I appreciate your insights, Steve Brody. I once heard someone say, "if you can't count it, it doesn't count." Figuring out what matters and finding means to measure the progress helps business owners stay on the right path.
