Can you handle the TRUTH?

Do you remember 2008 and 2009?

If you were in the car business during those two years, I’m sure you remember them very well, for those two years were probably two of the most challenging years we have ever lived through.

The reality was that most dealers endured the worst of times. Many lost their businesses, some lost everything. It may seem like a long time ago to you now as the rebound of our industry over the last few years has been record breaking.

The leaders in our industry that were able to survive tell me they will always remember those dark days.

I remember that twenty-four-month period very well. I was forced to make some of the toughest decisions of my career. 

Expense control is always important in any business, but it became a matter of survival during those long days and months. We reviewed and adjusted every pay plan, eliminated numerous positions, minimized our inventory levels, cut advertising and measured each and every vendor we had partnered with. If we did not receive a solid return on our investment, we cancelled our contracts immediately.

What is very interesting about that time period is that it made all of us better operators. It didn’t matter how good a business person you were, the economic downturn of the great recession of 2008-2009 made you a better one. 

The timeless quote by Napoleon Hill, “through every adversity, there is a seed of an equal or greater benefit,” was proven to be true once again. 

It seems that all of us have become better because of it, but let me ask you a very serious question, have you let your guard down over the past few years? 

Are you spending more money today on advertising, training, and payroll because business has been so good? 

The answer is a resounding yes. 

We are all spending more money today and in some cases a lot more money.

Are you getting the return on your investment that you should be getting in your largest expense areas? 

You may be selling more and you may even be having record months and years, but how long will it last? 

Across our industry we are seeing more and more pressure on us to produce. Production levels in dealerships are at all-time highs, yet everyone wants more and more. The pressure dealers are beginning to feel from Apple, Google, Amazon, Uber, digital used car centers, our own manufacturers, the government and many others is real and they are doing everything they can take business away from dealers, and ultimately put them out of business.

Think about that for a moment, let that statement sink in. These companies are coming after you, your business and your money. What are you going to do about it?

We believe that we have the answer. 

You have seen for yourself that if you don’t change, and change quickly, you will get left behind and succumb to what is happening in the industry. We believe that the answer is no. Our experience tells us that most of them are not credible. They use smoke and mirrors and most cannot and will not ever deliver you the R.E.A.L. RESULTS you should be receiving. 

Stop giving them your hard earned money. They will never earn it and quite frankly, they do not deserve it.  

The truth is that most of these vendors we “partner” with are also partnered with our biggest competitors. They have no loyalty to you or to your business. Most of these vendors are hoping Google, Apple and the like will change the way dealerships operate. Even though no one will ever say it, they are in fact, against the dealer body, not for it. 

Change is coming.

One of first things I learned as a sales trainee was that you want to handle a customer’s objection before it ever becomes an objection.
