FSSAI NEWS 1. FSSAI exclaims that the star ratings for hotels are not mandatory for license renewal

It’s a huge relief to the hotels industry as FSSAI has decided that submission of star certificates issued by the Ministry of Tourism is not mandatory for the issuance or renewal of licenses. The hotels can now submit a declaration instead of the certificate, regardless of whether they are starred or not, for their FSSAI licenses.

However, the order exclaimed that hotels having a claimed star certificate shall have to submit the same, while FSSAI will not insist on a certificate from establishments that do not have a certificate, and the declaration will be accepted through these choices, encourage businesses to improve their hygiene standards & thus reduce the incidence of food-borne illness.

FSSAI NEWS 2. FDA Maharashtra orders FBOs in Pune to obtain licenses as soon as possible

Food business operators (FBOs) operating without licences and without being registered with the food safety authority have come under the scanner of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Maharashtra’s Pune division. FDA has directed the non-compliant FBOs to either get licenses or stop business. The officers found that several small scale shops in the city were violating the rule prescribed under the Food Safety Standards Regulations, 2011. It was also seen that the FBOs were violating even the basic food safety norms prescribed by the law.

The officials shall implement strict actions against the non-compliant FBOs and have asked them to get the licenses as soon as possible.

FSSAI NEWS 3. FSSAI proposes a new order regarding the yeast count in beer

The new notification by FSSAI might hit a total of 170 microbreweries across the country. FSSAI has restricted the count of yeast in beer and the rule shall come into effect on April 1. The officials want to regulate yeast and mold contamination, which might be unintentionally formed in beer as a result of improper sanitation and faulty storage. FSSAI CEO Pawan Agarwal exclaims that “The normal beer must be yeast free whereas draught and microbrewery beer has to be the yeast ceiling count of 40 CFU. The fear is that yeast above the permissible limit may multiply and render the beer unsafe.”
