We all experience the ups and downs of life, but when you suddenly move from one decade to another or through that decade, so much can change.
?
I discovered that challenges WILL pass, as mine did. ?You CAN come out of the pain points of overwhelm, divorce, empty nest syndrome, care-giving, anxiety, career concerns, lack of self-identity or self-worth and other challenges at any time in midlife; but it rarely happens overnight.
?
My FEARLESS 40’s decade were amazing.
?
?? I ran the London Marathon
?? I sold my successful Aromatherapy company called G.O.L.D
?? I was a Trustee of a Charitable Trust
?? I was a County tennis player
?? I took on a role as MD of a property company
?? Happy children. Happy Mum.
?? I had a lovely home
?? I had great friends
?
Life was a peach ??! What could possibly go wrong?
?
FALLIBLE?50’s or so I thought, but this brought:
?? Divorce
?? Death of 3 close friends – 2 of which were Godparents to our children
?? A friend who so sadly took his own life
?? Major deep vein thrombosis after a long haul flight which took a year to recover.
?? Property market crash which led to a huge financial loss.

?? Forced to sell family home.
?
I suffered with feelings of sadness, uncertainty, fear, guilt, lack in self-identity, lack of a sense of purpose and many other emotions.
?
Was it surprising I went for counselling?!
?
In the early 2000’s counselling was not as advanced or as effective as it is in 2024. The counsellor sat in his huge chair behind his vast desk and after my telling him about all my negative thoughts, he said arrogantly “Here is a little box (size of a match box), add all your negative thoughts ?in this box and put everything behind you.” I remember looking at him and saying “I need a bloody big box to put in all my negative thoughts at the moment!
?
I wish that there had been more help available as I wasted so much time in the midlife muddle or midlife bubble. However, as a result I came out of my comfort zone and retrained first as a?NLP Master Practitioner and then as coach around 2007 with the excellent Kim Morgan (Barefoot Coaching.) I gained so much clarity with a sense of purpose and owned the fact that I had years of experience, transferable skills and over the years I have received several awards. Most of my testimonials tell me I am a great active listener where they achieve fantastic results!

The answer to the title of this post is that you can come back from failures or challenges in midlife, but the process is quicker with support.

3 个月What a great article Gill Mathias and how amazing that you took such a difficult time by the horns and changed it. I am a strong advocate of borrowing expertise from others and particularly when facing big challenges or changes - you are never alone and why would anyone want to prolong the pain? Using your personal experiences to help others is fantastic!
