Stick around for the Social Media News to Use below.
An unbelievable week in social media news.
Two of the biggest companies in these global platforms are flailing and in turmoil - Meta (umbrella company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) and Twitter. Some might even go as far as saying, "Social media as we know it is over."
I don't necessarily disagree. These platforms are great for what they are and when they are, you just have to ALWAYS understand that they can, will, and are guaranteed to change.
They’re here today, but could be gone or completely different tomorrow.
Did anyone else feel the absurdity in the air as Elon Musk did his grand waltz into Twitter HQ with a sink in hand and took it over, a few days later Instagram had a massive outage that went on for the good part of a day impacting millions of accounts, and LinkedIn decided it wanted in on the party and went down very briefly that same day?
These are all giant reminders to be intentional about your use of these channels.
If you’re trying to build and grow something sustainable, you HAVE to have a way to capture your audience. DO NOT allow any one platform to hold all of your cards.
It breaks my heart because I’ll get messages quite regularly from people who have been hacked and can’t get back into their Instagram or Twitter account, their Facebook ad account got shut down, they can’t remember their password and the email address to their account is no longer accessible. That whole entire audience is gone for them now overnight. I’ve seen it time and time again.
And now with how Elon is making a new headline every day as he tweets out new feature announcements flippantly and chaotically, people with massive Twitter followings might not have a viable community there for long, it's all you can do to focus on your business and the deeper meaning behind your brand. (Some of you caught my full Elon Musk rant on my IG Stories yesterday.)
Emails or phone numbers are precious pieces of data to be able to always communicate with your people.
Why do you think every single tool or thing you sign up for asks for your email address? They’re not asking for your Twitter or IG handle. They want direct access to you.
You too can start building direct access to your people by capturing emails and/or numbers and using those channels to communicate. My emails consistently average a 50%+ open rate which is incredible. Compare that to the average engagement on a social post? There’s no comparison.
Don’t get me wrong, if you’re on social media to chat and absorb info and connect with others and keep up with friends and family, that’s great too. Do your thing. That’s the core of social media.
My point is to make sure you know YOUR point for being on social platforms or anywhere online. Set your intention now.
My intention? To connect with as many people as possible so I can help them grow their brand using social media channels, to keep people in the know with my weekly Social Media News to Use email, and to be of service everywhere I am - online and in person.?
