I get this question. A lot. And it is quite understandable. After all, the sooner the QDRO is finalized and submitted to the plan administrator, the sooner the client receives their money.
The short answer is, preparing the QDRO paperwork can begin as soon as you’ve reached a final agreement between spouses as to how the retirement account will be divided. Seems simple, yet there are nuances to this answer.
