Making a site mobile responsive (i.e. smart-phone-optimized, and user friendly on multiple device) could mean rebuilding your site completely, and can be quite expensive.
Now, not have a mobile responsive site can be even more expensive. Recently Google announce that it would be changing its algorithm yet again. This change could cost you in more ways than one.
Google feels that mobile responsive pages provide a much better experience to people searching, and because it seems that more searches are done on mobile devices than on a desktop, they will start penalizing companies that do not have an optimized mobile ready site.
This means that even if you a paying for an entity to optimize your page so that it will appear on the first page, if it is not mobile optimized it will be downgraded. It will also penalize those website that contain flash videos.
Consider the fact that most people sleep with their phones within arms' reach. You can reach potential customers 24-7 with a mobile-friendly site. It would seem that you would want your site to be the one they can reach while driving down the street searching for a place to eat, or shop.
We live in an instant society, where people want an answer NOW, and if they can't reach it on your site they will go to the next one. They become very frustrated when the information doesn't load, or is simply not readable. If your site is the one that delivers is the one that wins!
