Can Words Truly Get Things Done?

Can Words Truly Get Things Done?

Effective communication is key to success in both personal and professional settings. Today, I want to discuss the importance of "speaking sweetly" - choosing your words wisely, even when expressing disagreement or asking questions.

As a mentor, I recently met with a mentee. I asked him what is the best way to build a different personality & impression with how to ask questions in company meetings. Here's a common scenario:

Public Announcement: The CEO announces a 20% cost reduction, a 10% workforce reduction, and a return of funds to investors.

Employee Misunderstanding: Many employees assume this won't work, fearing business collapse and the need for additional capital.

Employee's Question to Management in Monthly Meeting: "Can I understand how we can achieve these promised reductions and return on investment? What is the plan?"

Impact of the Question: This phrasing comes across as confrontational, questioning the CEO's and Management Team's abilities.

Here's a more effective approach:

Employee: "As I understand, there will be cost and manpower reductions with a return to investors. My question is how we can all contribute to achieving these goals. What actions can we take at our level? Can everyone be a part of this journey, and how can we contribute to the organization's overall success?"

This approach demonstrates a spirit of collaboration and a willingness to help as a part of INCLUSIVENESS. It positions the employee as someone invested in the company's success, not someone challenging the decision.

  • Improved Relationships: Considerate language fosters trust and respect.
  • Enhanced Credibility: Well-chosen words project professionalism and competence.
  • Increased Influence: People are more receptive to ideas presented thoughtfully.

  • Active Listening: Pay close attention to understand the other person's perspective.
  • Empathy: Try to see things from their point of view.
  • Clarity and Concision: Express yourself clearly and concisely using positive language.
  • Focus on Solutions: Express your ideas in a way that promotes solutions, not problems.

Note: This daily newsletter reflects my personal views, with the sole intention of helping each other grow. I'm always happy to discuss and hear your perspectives!
