Can weight loss be guaranteed?

Today, Allurion made two major announcements: 1) launch of the Iris? Artificial Intelligence Platform and Success Predictor, a machine learning algorithm that predicts outcomes as early as 20 days from the start of the Allurion Program and 2) Treatment Tracking and Clinic-Led Onboarding which enable seamless management of patients undergoing one or multiple weight loss treatments including gastric balloons, surgery, or medications.

While we believe these features will lead to improved outcomes for patients and streamlined workflows for providers, they are just the first in a pipeline that will seek to answer an audacious question we asked ourselves a few years ago: can weight loss be guaranteed?

No matter the weight loss treatment, there are always so-called “non-responders”—patients who do not reach the criterion for a successful outcome. The reasons are multifactorial and are often discovered far too late in the game. By the time these patients are identified, the therapy may be over (e.g. a balloon) or discontinued (e.g. a drug) or the patient has lost contact with their care team (e.g. in bariatric surgery).

But what if these patients were identified early—within just a few weeks—and the providers are called to action to get them back on track? If discovered early, these patients can be “course-corrected” through closer follow-up, more intense lifestyle modification, or more frequent remote monitoring (just to name a few).

The Success Predictor is designed to do just that.

What fascinated us when we were training the Success Predictor was that within the first 20 days—to the human eye—the weight loss curves of Allurion responders and non-responders were nearly identical, but with the power of machine learning, we were able to differentiate them. The insights proved powerful: in our beta testing, 100% of providers modified their management technique to get non-responders back on track.

As weight loss treatments evolve and become more widespread, the need for such technology will only grow. With Treatment Tracking and Clinic-Led Onboarding, we believe that we can offer similar features for patients undergoing other weight loss treatments like surgery or pharmacotherapy with the ultimate goal of 100% of patients—no matter their therapy of choice—achieving a response.

This theoretically guarantees patients and providers throughout the weight loss ecosystem a successful outcome and moves us one step closer to our mission at Allurion of ending obesity around the world.

Patient engagement, support and retention remain a significant challenge for clinicians supporting patients to achieve and maintain clinically significant weight loss. The ability to identify which patients require additional support early in their weight management journey is key. I'm excited by the work we are doing at Allurion, continually striving to support providers and patients with the best possible digital tools and support. I particularly look forward to pushing the boundaries and leading the way as we evolve Iris!
