I know it sounds crazy! But I'm not talking about digging into our pockets or bank accounts to share (although if you can afford to please do!)
No. What I'm talking about is our inadvertent savings. I saw an amazing Facebook message about using the money you are saving on your underground journeys to support artists who's gigs are being cancelled....Great idea!
It got me thinking. Some of us are very lucky in this crisis. Our jobs can be done 100% from home. Our companies are able to support us to continue to work without losing any salary. And even more they are flexible with us to support our children, and families.
And for people like us, we are saving travel money, lunches out, dry cleaning, coffees on our way to work and maybe other positives we haven't thought about yet! Our costs of work are going down! Here are some ways that I'm going to use that saved money to help those who may not be as fortunate as me. I invite you to join me.
- Shop local - small independent food shops employe local people, and are unlikely to have a huge numbers behind them, farmers markets too. Supporting our local sole traders where we can (they might even have more stock!).
- Supporting online artists/events and innovators who are moving their beautiful art pieces (music, drawings, instructions)online (many for free!).
- Support companies who have moved their businesses online (training companies, consultants)
- Donate to charities who are set up to help the poor/less fortunate who will be overloaded in this time. Food banks will be supporting more and more people and their supplies are drying up.
- Support organisations who are working on the frontline.
- Pay it forward. Use this "extra" money to support people who need it the most in these times. Perhaps put together a "care box" for a frontline staff member, or someone who is more vulnerable, who can't get to the supermarket or shops.
In this the most difficult time many of us have faced most important thing is to be kind. Support each other many of us are more fortunate and we can use this fortune for the good of others, to ease the burden and bring us all together a little more.
On this international day of happiness, don't forget that #togetherwegotthis
I'd love to hear your ideas below how we could use our #inadvertentsavings to help others?

4 年A really thoughtful article, Sarah Metcalfe. I've already been using the money that I have saved to set up a regular donation to our local food bank. #6 is a lovely idea and one that I will certainly look to start. Indeed, #togetherwegotthis
