Moreover, the process of curating and labeling massive datasets often relies on underpaid labor in developing countries, raising ethical concerns. As AI technology grows, it’s critical for the industry to adopt more sustainable practices, including more energy-efficient hardware and reducing reliance on exploitative labor practices. AI doomerism—the fear that AI will lead to catastrophic outcomes—has shaped much of the public discourse. While some researchers warn about existential threats, others argue that the focus should be on more immediate, tangible risks, such as AI bias, job displacement, and privacy concerns.
