Can We Stay Healthy by Eating Desserts and Chocolates?

I want to start today's article with a declaration.

I am a foodie and love indulging in sweets, desserts, and chocolates.

  • Dark Chocolate- count me in
  • Decadent cakes- yummy
  • Fruit sorbets and ice creams- refreshing

But wait—aren’t we supposed to avoid sweets to stay healthy?

You might be surprised that the answer isn’t as black-and-white as you think. I consume everything in moderation after having a consultation with an expert. If you have diabetes or any medical complications, it's best to have that discussion too.

Maintaining the Balance

I once tried completely cutting out sweets from my diet. It backfired making me irritable and cranky. Besides chocolates and sweets can offer these health benefits:

1. Boosts Mood: Have you ever noticed how your favorite chocolate lifts your spirits? Eating chocolate can release endorphins, or “feel-good” hormones to make you feel happier and relaxed.

2. Rich in Antioxidants: Dark chocolate, in particular, is packed with antioxidant properties. It helps you fight inflammation, and improve blood flow, and heart health.

3. Encourages Mindful Eating: Allowing yourself a small, satisfying treat can help curb cravings and prevent binge eating.

4. Skin Saver: The antioxidants in dark chocolate can help protect your skin from UV damage and keep it looking radiant and healthy.

Desserts Aren’t the Enemy—They’re Your Ally!

When you add natural substances instead of artificial sweeteners, desserts can be an enjoyable part of a healthy diet.

Natural Sweeteners: Opt for treats made with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.

Healthy Fats: Desserts made with ingredients like avocados, nuts, or coconut oil provide healthy fats that improve brain and heart health.

Fruit Bowl: Incorporating fruits into your desserts not only adds natural sweetness but also packs in vitamins, fiber, and minerals.

Homemade No-Bake Pannacotta Recipe at Home

Here is a recipe that I often enjoy. For this, you will need:

  • 2 cups (480 ml) heavy cream
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1/3 cup (67 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp (30 g) cornflour (cornstarch)
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Optional Toppings

  • Fresh berries
  • Honey
  • Caramel sauce
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Mint leaves

Instructions

Prepare the Cornflour Slurry

- In a small bowl, mix 2 tbsp of cornflour with 4 tbsp of cold milk. Stir until the cornflour is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Set this aside.

Heat the Cream and Milk

- In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of heavy cream, 1 cup of milk, and 1/3 cup of sugar. Add a pinch of salt.

- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it's hot but not boiling. You should see small bubbles forming around the edges.

Incorporate the Cornflour Mixture

- Gradually whisk the cornflour slurry into the hot cream mixture. Continue to stir constantly to avoid any lumps from forming.

- Keep heating and stirring the mixture over medium heat until it thickens. This should take about 5-7 minutes. The mixture should become thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.

Add Vanilla

- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in 1 tsp of vanilla extract.

Strain for Smoothness

- For an extra smooth panna cotta, pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large measuring cup or a bowl.

Pour into Molds

- Pour the panna cotta mixture into your chosen molds or serving dishes. You can use small ramekins, glass jars, or even silicone molds for easy unmolding.

Chill to Set

- Allow the panna cotta to cool to room temperature. Then, cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or until set. For the best results, refrigerate overnight.

Unmold with Ease

  • Now unmold the panna cotta by gently dipping the bottom of the mold in warm water for a few seconds. Run a knife around the edge, then invert onto a plate.

Add Your Favorite Toppings

  • Garnish with fresh berries, a drizzle of honey or caramel, or a sprinkle of chocolate shavings for a beautiful presentation.

1. Practice Portion Control: Keep servings small to avoid overindulgence.

2. Choose Quality: Choose high-quality, nutrient-dense options like dark chocolate or homemade treats made with wholesome ingredients.
