"Can We Share?"

My 84 year old mom is getting her estate planning redone. Dad died almost 15 years ago and she didn’t change anything then. Now she feels its time.

My question is about PoAs. Her attorney recommended she name only one of her three children as her Power of Attorney. I think that’s something we should all share.

Her attorney says she also needs a medical directive. I think the PoA covers that and she is just trying to add some costs to the package.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe your mother’s attorney is giving you good advice.

Multiple Powers of Attorney typically lead to conflicts, delays, and problems. In my experience one PoA works best. Whomever is named PoA would be wise to keep their siblings well informed.

Medical Directives and PoA are two very different documents with very different uses. Your mother needs both.

I understand being skeptical of legal advice that is often quite expensive. In this case, I believe you are getting quality.
