Can we make it a week of welfare wins?
Next week we start with (at least, I've literally lost count) the third parliamentary debate on pet theft reform. Like the movie Groundhog Day we are hoping that this time everything is works out perfectly and we get the happy ending.
Normally, it goes perfectly until the minister stands up - having apparently not listened to a word of it - and says 7 years and microchips... have a look at the presentation at the end, that we'd love you to share with everyone you know and your MP, to see why those reasons not to act drives everyone potty.
And then on Friday we at last get the second reading of #FinnsLaw2.
FinnsLaw1 should be a movie - it was perfect. PC Dave Wardell wrote the book Fabulous Finn about how his heroic dog had saved his life but very nearly died bravely holding on while being stabbed with an enormous blade.
The nation had been horrified to discover this vicious attack was then only classed as criminal damage to property - like kicking the door of a police car. Well that was obviously wrong. So Finns Law changed all that.
But then the real shocker - if the crooks were charged instead with animal cruelty that only had a max sentence of six months. And since I have been studying sentencing I now understand that no one ever gets the maximum. And no one hardly ever serves the term they are given, either.
Like pet theft, the jail time deterrent for animal cruelty doesn't exist. Pretty much everywhere in the world has stronger sentencing for animal cruelty.
Hence FinnsLaw2 to increase the cruelty tariff to 5 years. Very conservative, sensible and quite frankly no MP in their right mind would oppose it.
But then, just before it finished it's journey into law - parliament had to shut down early. It had to start the long journey again in this parliament.
On Friday the bill has it's second reading. Please, make sure the up skirting MP doesn't veto it, really it has to go through this time.
Now Pet theft Reform and Finn's Law have a lot in common.
They are all about laws that no longer reflect how we feel about animals in today's society. The old laws objectified sentient beings. Just like the amazing Ginsberg tackled sexist legislation in the US, we must go through our statute books and revise laws to reflect the society we now live in.
We regard dogs and cats as family now, not things. We need our laws to better protect them.
Please contact your MP ASAP and explain that although we live in a challenging time here's something they can fix.
Let's make it an Autumn Fair of Welfare Wins. The most productive week they'll ever have.
Here's something I would love you to send to your MP with your personal message of support for them backing these two obvious wrongs that need to be put right on Monday and Friday.
Let's make something positive happen in 2020. Please help spread the message. Let's all push together on this one - I mean, who doesn't agree with both of these?
Be lovely to see big brands using their social reach to push for this too - your customers will definitely agree with both these causes I can guarantee it.
