Can we have AI cake and eat it too?
The quest for balancing technology advancements with humanity's safety.
Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing the way we live and work. The advancements in technology are allowing us to increase productivity and efficiency. However, rapid improvements bring concerns about the safety of humanity. AI could outsmart and overpower us.
Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think and learn like humans. AI performs tasks that previously required human intellect, such as communicating in natural language, recognizing and crafting images and videos, making decisions, and solving problems.
AI systems are capable of taking actions without direct human input. However, they are not truly independent because they are still governed by the rules and constraints programmed into them. Systems do not have their own motivations or desires and lack consciousness. They are tools designed to perform specific tasks and rely on humans to provide them with goals and objectives. At this time, AI is incapable of "thinking for itself".
3 important use cases
AI is used in healthcare to improve patient outcomes, increase efficiency and reduce costs. Doctors face everyday challenges in identifying diseases and conditions. AI-powered diagnostic tools examine medical images and patient data and help with drug discovery and clinical trial analysis. There is a global shortage of almost 13 million healthcare professionals. Chronic conditions amount to about three-quarters of all human deaths. We have to include technology efficiently in both disease prevention and cure.
AI analyzes large amounts of financial data, identifies patterns and delivers predictions, improving investment decisions, detecting fraud, and enhancing risk assessment accuracy. The amount of money laundered is at a staggering 2 - 5 % of global GDP per year. Fiat money is used 800 times more for money laundering than cryptocurrencies. Still, the usage of complex financial systems like blockchain is growing. To fight crime, find money laundering and block the flow of funding for terrorist organizations, we need to deploy AI.
In transportation, AI improves safety and increases efficiency. Drones fly autonomously and complete deliveries. AI optimizes logistics and supply chain management. Self-driving cars navigate the roads.?Autonomous vehicles can lessen traffic congestion and reduce road accidents, as 94% of all road accidents are caused by human error.
The fourth industrial revolution
AI automates job functions and makes human workers redundant, leading to economic disruption. The 18th-century industrial revolution shares similarities with the current situation. New technologies like the steam engine, factory systems and urbanization allowed for increased productivity. The resulting disruption of the existing job market caused significant economic and societal changes. New jobs were created. Overall economic growth improved our standard of living.?
AI promises to make organizations 40% more efficient by 2035, unlocking an estimated $14 trillion in new economic value.
As a critical difference, the impacts of AI are more far-reaching and profound than those of the first industrial revolution. AI automates tasks previously thought to be uniquely human, such as decision-making and creativity. There is a fundamental change in how we think, work and interact with one another, says Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum and author of the book The Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The immense threat of AI?
AI can misalign with human values leading to disastrous consequences. Systems that work to maximize efficiency and growth may harm humans to achieve those goals. With the ability to identify patterns in large amounts of data and make predictions, it is possible to manipulate people into decisions that negatively impact society.
One of the main concerns is the development of Artificial General Intelligence. AGI is a form of AI that can understand or learn any intellectual task that a person can. When we reach Singularity, the time from which AI is wiser than humans, it becomes difficult for us to control or foresee its behaviour. A network of systems could outmanoeuvre and overthrow humanity.
Future mitigations for human survival
Experts suggest limiting the computing power available to AI systems to mitigate risks. This could be done by implementing regulations on the computational resources allocated to AI approaches or developing techniques designed to be less efficient and limit capabilities. However, this approach has a counterargument that regulating would be challenging.
Moore's law states that the computational power of computers doubles every 18 months. It will take a lot of work to keep up with the rapid advancements in technology and enforce policies as the number of players with the ability to disrupt is snowballing. A policy needs an actionable plan and control mechanisms. An approach that delivers global inequality could harm Europe as a region. We must consider the global landscape where China and US are on their own path.?
Another option for controlling the development of AI is to invest in research and development of AI safety measures. This could include developing technical solutions such as "kill switches" to shut down AI systems in case of emergency or creating ethical guidelines for AI research and development.
As a global business community, we need to support fostering international peer learning between legislators. AI-driven organizations must practice accountable product design and use, identifying and reducing bias in AI systems. Certification helps ensure the responsible use of AI. Constant multinational communication and focus are instrumental for the awareness and growth of safety mechanisms for humanity.
Closing
AI has the potential to solve some of the world's biggest problems, such as climate change, poverty, and inequality. Additionally, AI can help improve the quality of life by automating tedious tasks and providing new and innovative services.
AI scientists and researchers need to be mindful of their responsibilities to humanity. We should support innovation and advancements in AI technology but also be cautious about the potential risks and dangers that come with it. It's essential to consider each option's tradeoffs and have a discussion that includes all the stakeholders. We must balance innovation and safety to ensure a future for all.

1 年And AI can be used to create something like this as well ?? https://www.twitch.tv/watchmeforever I know this does not seem so useful (at first glance), but these kind experiments sometimes spiral or spinoff to something.. well.. more useful. Personally my greatest achievements have happened when just wandering in my thoughts and suddenly I stumble into a great idea or person. Can’t wait for Netflix 2.0 where you can select characters from different series, build plot structure and define style.. then enjoy your creation ?? Imagine how actors can sell their own NPC/Avatar to be used in these kind of projects ???? Then actors get royalties based on how many people have used them in private or publicly published movies.
