Can we fit one more transit slot in the Panama Canal?
There are recent talks about the need to increase customers’ window of time for NeoPanamax vessels to enter a port area in the Pacific side of the Panama Canal. Would this also benefit other type of vessels??
The answer is yes! The transit segment I am referring to is located between the Bridge of Americas and buoy no.6 (approximately 4km long). This is both the entry/exit points of the Panama Canal and the entry/exit points for the Balboa port and PSA terminal. PSA is an important transshipment hub for MSC and the Panamanian ports are important hubs for Maersk.
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is currently reviewing this matter in detail. The Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal confirmed she boarded NeoPanamax vessels on that segment to analyse the situation first-hand. She shared in a recent interview with Panorama Maritimo Y Logistico that the window has been confirmed and the appropriate safety protocols are being discussed with all pertinent parties in the Panama Canal area to ensure a safe and efficient pass for NeoPanamax vessels.
Now, if you are not a container operator why would this be of interest to you? Well, the window of time that could be used to have NeoPanamax traffic both ways, which is currently not permitted, would allow for approximately three extra hours of Canal transit time. This would mean a partial transit for one vessel – saving half a day of hire, and perhaps an extra transit slot due to the decrease in Canal Water Time (CWT is the time between arrival in Panama Canal waters and sailing from the locks). So, yes – this development not just benefits container carriers, but also other types of vessels.
