Panel on Ending ultra poverty in India through the Graduation approach: where are we and what will it take??
With 23 million households (5.9% of the population) living in extreme poverty, there is a clear need for an evidence based approach to end ultra poverty in India. Globally, the "Graduation approach" is one such model to sustainably pull households out of ultra poverty by enabling them to participate in the social, financial & economic development activities in their community.
Despite a strong social welfare system and 8 million Self Help Groups s in place, ultra poor households in India are hard to reach and remain underserved. It is for this reason that India has made addressing the plight of the SC/ST households & PVTGs a national priority. With states like Bihar and a thriving non-profit ecosystem leading the way, the Graduation approach is in its early stages of adoption in India and the time is right for policymakers, payers and doers to come together and commit to scaling the Graduation approach to end ultra-poverty.?
The goal of the session is to shed light on the state of ultra-poverty in India and the potential for the Graduation model to end this state within this decade. We will address some of the key questions about implementing the Graduation approach in India, such as: -?
