Can virtual triage save lives? Let the stats do the talking!

This month we are asking three questions! What role can virtual triage (VT) play in catching potentially dangerous symptoms and sparking timely intervention? What are the month’s hot healthcare topics? And are you ready for HLTH Europe?

Can virtual triage save lives?

Did you know that?cardiovascular diseases?are the leading cause of death globally? According to the WHO, they?take an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. Annually, 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke; of these, 5 million die and another 5 million are left permanently disabled.

These staggering statistics highlight the?critical importance of early detection?and timely medical intervention.

In an analysis of over three million VT interviews, 12,000 users exhibited symptoms highly indicative of five potentially life-threatening conditions; heart attack, stroke, asthma, pneumonia, and pulmonary embolism.?

Yet, 53.5% of these users stated they were?unlikely to seek emergency care?before using the virtual triage tool.

What’s more, 33.5% showed?no intent to consult a physician?at all!

?That’s over half of high-risk individuals?for major health emergencies intending to skip emergency care, and a third avoiding medical care completely.

These statistics highlight serious misalignment between patients’ perceptions about their health and the actual seriousness of their conditions. If left undiscovered, this can have?severe consequences.

  • Increased risk of mortality
  • Heightened possibility of severe/long-term health problems
  • Increased medical costs

This peer-reviewed study demonstrates VT's capability to significantly reduce avoidable health risks and healthcare costs by?enhancing early detection and routing people to the right care they need—potentially saving lives in the process.?
