Can a tool be complete?

Can a tool be complete?

Some people have commented that processes, artifacts, and team dynamics are “missing” in the unFIX model. They say our pattern library is “incomplete”. One even called it a “weakness”.

Really? Can a toolset ever be complete?

Knives, pans, and chopping boards are essential tools for professional chefs, but nobody complains that Le Creuset focuses mainly on quality pans, not knives. Nobody finds it a problem that Wüsthof offers knives but no pans or chopping boards. Professional chefs have no issues using good tools from different sources.

Likewise, professional agilists should find their inspiration from multiple sources.?The unFIX model has (at this time) nothing to offer when it comes to planning, backlogs, retrospectives, etc., because there is already so much good stuff out there. Why even bother? We?expect?professionals to combine unFIX patterns with ideas from Scrum, Kanban, Team Topologies, LeSS, Sociocracy, and others. Hell, even SAFe 6.0 might offer a good idea or two.

I am perfectly happy that Le Creuset has a significant “weakness” in the chopping boards area because they decided to focus on the best pans. And fortunately, Wüsthof is somewhat “incomplete” by offering mainly quality knives and little else. Good for them. I can get my chopping boards elsewhere, thank you.?Focus on one thing and trying to do that best is a strength, not a weakness.

“When you try to be everything to everyone, you accomplish being nothing to anyone.”

But here we are ... people complain that this model is “incomplete” and that model has “weaknesses” because they don’t offer anything for this or that. It is so disappointing. So ... unprofessional.

The core team at The unFIX Company commits to offering the best pattern library for versatile organization design and development.?The unFIX model is intentionally “incomplete”.?For sure, we will be adding new ideas. Last week, I hosted a very successful?SAFe Unfixed webinar?(300 attendees!), where I discussed many opportunities for improvement. Our team has quite a backlog now. :-) The first new pattern sets will be around Common Roles, Time Commitment, and Participation Levels. You can expect an announcement for a community meetup soon.

However, our team commits to only adding patterns when we believe we can do better. And for anything still “missing”, we trust professionals will know how to use a search engine.

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" can be a good guiding principle, but it's important to remember that there is always room for improvement. Seek ways to make it work even better or to address new challenges that arise. And "reinventing the wheel" is often used to describe a situation where someone is spending time and effort to create something that already exists, rather than using existing solutions or good practices. Isn't that wasteful? We are encouraged to continuously improve their processes and practices through regular retrospectives and feedback loops. This allows them to identify areas for improvement and make incremental changes over time. But it's important to balance this desire with maintaining stability and avoiding unnecessary, wasteful changes. A person who lacks knowledge, experience, or good judgment can still make mistakes or perform poorly, even if they have the right tools for the job. "a fool with a tool is still a fool". And critics abound. Thankfully we have the ability to think critically and evaluate things based on our own experiences, beliefs, and values. So Swiss Army knives might be convenient and versatile, but it ultimately depends on the task at hand and applying the right tool for the job.

So absolutely with you - David and I always explain that this is really an advantage of the unFIX pattern library and you can easily add and combine (already lived) methods and processes with it (which makes changes and "switching" to it much easier as you don't need to change everything at once.) The feedback of our participants in the workshops is that they really appreciate that "openess" of unFIX. Hope that those are just single voices
