Can TikTok Help Grow Your Home Decor Business?

I just read an article about how TikTok is helping teeny-tiny vintage home decor retailers build their businesses in the SoHo neighbourhood in NYC. It got me thinking about TikTok & the interior design / home decor industry.

The gist of the story is as follows:

  • As New Yorkers got vaccinated against Covid, foot traffic picked up all around the city & retailers of all types started seeing a bump in customers & sales. Along with this bit of good news, TikTokers began documenting post-Covid spots to check out in New York.
  • This led to an increase of customers telling the vintage shop owners that they saw them on TikTok & decided to come check out their collection of vintage home decor items.

And it wasn't just influencers...local customers posted videos of themselves visiting the vintage shop, presenting the store as a destination for anyone looking to decorate their home with Price’s uniquely curated vintage finds.?

All this got me thinking, why aren't more interior design & home decor experts using TikTok as their #1 social media marketing channel?

  • Unlike Instagram, advertising on TikTok is a bargain.
  • Unlike Instagram, TikTok's algorithm focuses on "what you like" rather than the "who you know & who knows you".
  • TikTok users spend way more time on the platform than Instagram users

These 3 facts make TikTok a much better choice for small businesses than Instagram.

So why are interior designers & small home decor business owners spending the time & money on Instagram?
