Can a surgical instrument emanate qualities of a desirable object?
Orca Surgical developed a hand held tool for ophthalmology surgeries.
The device enables surgeons to perform flap-less epithelial removal by gently sweeping the epithelial surface. The procedure lasts about ten seconds, not at all painful for the patient, who can walk away once it's done.
Orca asked us to redesign its multi-use titanium tool, and make it a disposable plastic device. The challenge was to design it with a quality of a consumer product, preferably desirable.
Obviously it had to be ergonomically suitable for different hands, and various hand choreographic needed for the procedure.
We respect paradoxes and even welcome them, since they are the essence of every meaningful project.
We tried therefore to create a product personality that will cause the user to think twice before throwing it away after its use and maybe prefer to put it in his shirt pocket, protruding like a fountain pen.
