This literature review provides a summary of different rTMS or TBS protocols that have been applied in studies investigating MDD patients with certain psychiatric comorbidities and highlights biomarkers that may be used to predict rTMS treatment response.
Several TMS protocols have been demonstrated to be clinically effective in MDD. However, the response rate varies across clinical applications. The reason for that could be the heterogeneity of real-world psychiatric comorbidities, such as generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, or substance use disorder.
Personalization of treatment approaches by assigning patients to their most optimal treatment protocols based on individual comorbidities may help to increase treatment response.
