Can Online Networking Find You A Job?

Can Online Networking Find You A Job?

How will you find your next job? Online networking. How will you navigate your job search in our “normal” world of work? Not alone. What will be “normal” post COVID? The million dollar question.

In Fast Company's “How finding a job will be different in 2021”, author Gwen Morgan shares seven key insights into “normal”. She talks to Deloitte’s Global Human Capital Leader, Erica Volini, CEOs of HR technology platforms (Abakar Saidov, Beamery, and Hari Kolam, Findem), and includes data from Gartner.

The top three insights which I found helpful for the career development of our job-hunting students:

 1.  Internal Talent Marketplaces Will Grow in Importance”.

More movement within organizations where employees will take on “stretch roles, gig assignments, mentors, and other opportunities to develop their skills” will be where employers will look first when hiring.

Whether you are lucky to be on the inside or the outside looking in, you will need to be more strategic, more creative, and more determined in finding your next role.

 2.   “Your Digital Presence Will Matter More”.

What you post online matters more than your resume. Audit your social presence “to ensure your professional digital footprints demonstrate your thought leadership and give you an edge”.

Stand out from the rest of the candidates by polishing your digital presence, not just your resume, and being more visible online.

 3.   “Online Networking Will Continue to Grow”.

Saving time, keeping in touch, and being a part of professional communities and associations is a much easier to maintain online than in person.

Know where the people are who can provide you with job leads, advice, and company intel. Connect and have a virtual coffee chat instead of getting together in person.

Timely article Jean Chow. You and I both expound the value of online networking to all of the grads, soon to be grads and anyone else who we talk to about networking. Just want to shoutout that I used the same networking approach that you've taught me and so many others, in my own job search this winter. And, it works. My new national social innovation role with the Stone Soup Network was a direct result of my network. So, for those thinking about your upcoming workshop I say - just do it. Jean knows networking. She practices it everyday. And she will deliver great value in her workshop.
