Can the moon impact your productivity ?

I’ve always considered myself a pragmatic person. I don’t talk to angels, burn sage, or engage in anything that could be labeled "woo woo." My approach to business has always been rooted in logic, strategy, and hard work. But lately, I’ve noticed something that, frankly, makes me a little uncomfortable to admit: my energy and the quality of results I achieve in my business seem to align with the phases of the moon.

Even as I write this, I cringe at how it sounds. But the pattern is too consistent to ignore. There are times in the month when I can sense whether I’ll thrive on creative brainstorming, roll up my sleeves for focused execution, dive into something mundane like bookkeeping, or even cancel the day entirely and binge-watch Netflix. And when I try to fight against that flow? It feels like I’m wading through mud.

So, is it just coincidence, or is there something to this lunar connection? Let’s explore.

Energy Fluctuations Are Real—But Why?

First, let’s be clear: Everyone experiences energy fluctuations. There are days when you feel unstoppable, and days when everything feels like a chore. For most people, this ebb and flow is attributed to stress levels, sleep quality, diet, or seasonal changes. But what if there’s another layer influencing us—one that’s been quietly at work for millennia?

The moon has a profound impact on Earth. Its gravitational pull governs the tides, and if it can move oceans, it’s not far-fetched to think it might subtly influence us too. After all, the human body is roughly 60% water. While science hasn’t definitively proven a connection between lunar phases and human behavior, anecdotal evidence abounds. Farmers have planted crops by the moon for centuries, and some people swear that their sleep or mood shifts with the lunar cycle.

Could entrepreneurs be just as susceptible to these cycles?

The Phases of the Moon and Productivity

Let’s break down the moon’s phases and how they might align with our energy and focus:

  • New Moon (Beginning of the Cycle): This is a time for setting intentions and brainstorming. The energy of the new moon is often described as introspective—a great time to reflect on goals, plan strategies, or dream up new ideas. If you’re feeling low-energy during this phase, don’t force action. Use this time to plant seeds for future projects.
  • Waxing Moon (Growing Toward Full): As the moon grows, so does its energy. This is the time for action and building momentum. You may find it easier to tackle challenging tasks, take risks, or push through creative projects. It’s a period of growth and expansion—perfect for reaching out to new contacts or launching initiatives.
  • Full Moon (Mid-Cycle): The full moon is associated with peak energy and heightened emotions. For some, this is when creativity flows most freely. For others, it’s a time to celebrate accomplishments and take stock of progress. Be mindful, though—this heightened energy can sometimes feel overwhelming. Channel it into tasks that require passion and focus.
  • Waning Moon (After the Full): As the moon begins to shrink, so might your energy levels. This is a time for tying up loose ends, finishing projects, and turning your attention to more mundane tasks like bookkeeping or administrative work. It’s a natural period for reflection and preparation before the next cycle begins.

Going Against the Flow: Wading Through Mud

One of the most frustrating lessons I’ve learned is that when I try to fight against these natural rhythms, everything feels harder. For example:

  • Forcing creative work during a low-energy phase can lead to burnout and mediocre results.
  • Pushing through a packed schedule when my mind and body are craving rest leaves me irritable and unproductive.
  • Trying to "power through" without acknowledging these fluctuations often results in wasted time and effort.

On the other hand, when I lean into the flow—adjusting my tasks and expectations to match my energy levels—the results speak for themselves. It’s not about being lazy; it’s about working smarter by aligning with natural rhythms.

. Practical Ways to Experiment With Lunar Rhythms

If the idea of working with lunar cycles intrigues you, here are some practical ways to test it for yourself:

  • Track Your Energy and Tasks: Over a month, journal your energy levels, moods, and productivity. Note which tasks felt easy and which felt forced. Compare your notes to the moon’s phases to see if any patterns emerge.
  • Plan Around the Phases: Use the lunar framework as a guide. Schedule brainstorming and planning sessions around the new moon, action-oriented work during the waxing phase, high-energy tasks around the full moon, and reflection or mundane tasks during the waning phase.
  • Stay Flexible: This isn’t about rigid rules or astrology; it’s about experimenting with what works for you. If you notice a pattern, use it to your advantage. If you don’t, move on—it’s all part of the process.

Why This Isn’t "Woo Woo"

Acknowledging a connection between your productivity and the moon doesn’t mean you’re abandoning logic or science. It simply means you’re curious about how external factors might influence your internal world. If something as simple as tracking the moon’s phases can help you optimize your energy and focus, why not give it a try?

Entrepreneurship is about finding strategies that work for you. Whether it’s time-blocking, meditation, or yes, even the lunar cycle, every tool you add to your toolbox brings you closer to working in harmony with yourself.

Final Thoughts: Curiosity Over Cringe

The idea of aligning your business efforts with the moon’s phases might make you cringe at first, as it did for me. But if you’re noticing patterns in your energy and productivity, isn’t it worth exploring? You don’t need to burn sage or talk to angels to experiment with the rhythms of nature.

The beauty of being an entrepreneur is the freedom to shape your work in a way that feels authentic and sustainable. If paying attention to the moon helps you achieve better results and flow in your work, then lean into it. After all, the most successful entrepreneurs are the ones who stay curious, open-minded, and willing to adapt.

I would love to hear from any other entrepreneurs who share my experience.

Hi Melinda, I really like this article, fluctuating rhythms with the moon’s phases re not woo woo. It’s another area little researched though. Science does support (though under researched and little evidence) the premise that the moons phases have an impact on us. https://scitechdaily.com/new-research-shows-the-moon-influences-our-sleep/ Sleep influences our energy and impacts our circadian rhythms.
