Can ML Algorithms Help Pioneer a New Type of Vaccine?

This week in AI and ML news: MIT researchers propose an ML-powered approach to vaccine development, LLaMA leaks, and more.

Author’s Note?

My podcast conversation with James Joslin, Paul Murphy, and Mitchell Scott, the Co-Founders of MarineSitu, came to a close this week. In Part 3, our discussion focuses on the origins of MarineSitu and Plainsight’s partnership and the way purpose-built computer vision solutions are powering Blue Economy innovation.?

A New ML-Powered Approach to Vaccines??

A team of researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory believe a new approach to vaccinations, powered by machine learning, could eliminate the need for regular or seasonal boosters. Traditional antiviral boosters are only effective for limited periods because they target viruses and viruses are constantly changing. Rather than targeting pathogens themselves, the team has proposed aiming at the human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) that signal an infection.?

ML algorithms play a role by helping sort through heaps of data. The algorithms identify peptides that were consistent across multiple versions of the same virus as well as the HLAs produced following infection.?

The pan-variant approach to fighting disease looks promising. Mice injected with ML-derived vaccines showed a stronger immune response and all subjects survived. TechCrunch’s Devin Coldeway notes, however, that questions remain. Learn more in his overview of MIT’s ongoing research and the paper the team recently published in Frontiers in Immunology.??

Meta’s AI Language Model Leaks Online?

When Meta revealed LLaMA last month, eager ChatGPT users were likely disappointed to learn that the tech giant’s new AI language model was not released as an AI chatbot. LLaMA was instead pitched as a quartet of research tools that anyone in the broader AI community could request access to.?

Just weeks after accepting the first requests for access to its new models, Meta has seen LLaMA leak online. On March 3rd, a downloaded torrent appeared on the controversial community 4chan and it quickly made the rounds. The leak has already inspired a debate about the potential serious consequences, whether or not Meta deserves blame, and how this should affect the future of technology distribution. Discord Adds New OpenAI-Powered Features?

AI is everywhere as emerging solutions capture public attention and the giants of the tech world announce new AI-powered upgrades to their products. Discord is the latest site to launch a partnership with OpenAI and new features enabled by its ChatGPT technology. In a blog post published this week, the popular chat platform informed users of three upcoming, AI-focused updates.?

First, Discord’s chatbot, Clyde, is evolving thanks to the addition of tech from OpenAI. While the bot once provided limited support in the form of error messages, it will soon answer questions and carry out conversations with users. AutoMod, a feature introduced last year to automatically filter out messages that violate Discord’s rules, is also improving with the help of large language models to better understand context. The platform will also follow in the footsteps of services like Google Docs and introduce AI-generated conversation summaries. More updates are to come, including a text-to-image tool.
