Can losing your job really be the best thing to happen to you?

Can losing your job really be the best thing to happen to you?

With redundancies now becoming a regular news headline, what hope is there for people searching for new jobs? Explore with me why losing your job could be the best thing to happen to you.

You’ve been busy. Busy with your inbox, your to do list, busy with life. You just get busy. When suddenly your work busyness stops, you have space, time, emptiness to fill.

When was the last time you stopped to think why you do what you do?

It is not an indulgence to think about these questions. You have to do this thinking. Applying for jobs, going for interviews, starting something new; you need to know why you want it, why you are the best person for it. That is the only way you can stand out. And when you start to feel more aligned and clearer on those answers then you’ll move forward quicker.

It is also a good time to discover what you do not want anymore. Losing your job might be the disruption you need to discover a whole new future.

Five reasons why losing your job could be a good thing.

1.   It’s gives you permission to breathe. You can allow yourself to rest, to pause, without guilt. Because you didn’t choose this. And rest is part of rebuilding your energy. You can plan in a daily walk, a daily run or a daily mediation. You have to keep yourself in a good place now.

2.   It’s a chance to audit your life. Suddenly you have time to think about all parts of your life, family, friends, health, personal growth. And you realise they are all connected. You now have a chance to get more balance in your life, to find out what you really want to be doing and how you want to live. Think about areas of your life you’d like to improve.

3.   It is a moment to get to know yourself again. To move on, you have to think about you, who you are and what you have to offer. You have to think about your strengths, what you enjoy doing, moments of your life when you were thriving. This is what will give you the confidence to move on well, and remind you how great you are, and how great you will continue to be.

4.   It creates an urgency that fuels your creative thinking. The emotions of losing your job and then finding energy for your next move will give you the adrenaline to try things you may never thought of and be braver than ever before. You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose. The struggle fuels your drive to prove things, to solve things, to do things you may never have considered in the past.

5.  It is exactly the right time to see opportunity. With no overflowing diary you have time to see things differently. Take time to try new things. Connect to ex colleagues, old friends. Get curious about new projects you are interested in. How can you help? How can you get involved? You never know where your next move will come from, more than likely an unexpected place. So be open minded and put yourself out there and see what happens next.

Losing your job creates space for you stop and think, reflect on who you are and why you do what you do.

You have lost your job. You have to do something. So what are you going to do? Redirect your energy and emotions into making this a good thing for you.

Many people have made losing their job a good thing. This year many people will reinvent themselves, upgrade their career, see it as an opportunity and go for it.

Why should it not be you.

Hi Eleanor, I lost my job a couple of years ago. Became redundant at the publishing company I worked for and started my own Literary Agency on the first after my leave. And what do you know? Several years later I'm acting as your sub agent and sold the translation rights to your book to a Dutch publisher were I use to work before. True Story!
