Can LLMs be truly self programming entities

I think in this context , we need to be skeptical, at least in the sense of fully autonomous and truly creative self-programming in the near future, using current LLMs approaches.

Here is the logical inferences that can be drawn from current use cases of LLMs :

Current AI as Pattern Recognition, Not True Understanding: ChatGPT and similar LLMs are fundamentally sophisticated pattern-matching systems. They learn to predict the next word based on vast amounts of data but lack genuine understanding, reasoning, or consciousness.

Programming, especially complex programming, often requires deep understanding of problem domains, logical reasoning, and creative problem-solving – capabilities he suggests current AI lacks in a human-like sense.

Hallucinations and Lack of Truth Discernment in Code: If LLMs are prone to hallucinations and generating factually incorrect statements in natural language, then this issue could be even more critical in the context of programming.

Code needs to be precise and logically sound. An AI that "hallucinates" in code could produce programs that are syntactically correct but functionally flawed, unreliable, or contain serious bugs. Hence relying on a system prone to such inaccuracies for self-programming is problematic.

RLHF Limitations for Complex Tasks like Programming: Relying solely on RLHF to overcome the fundamental limitations of LLMs is going to be a mistake.

Yes RLHF can fine-tune outputs, But it doesn't fundamentally change the underlying pattern-matching nature.

Programming is a highly complex task requiring more than just aligning with human preferences; it demands rigorous logic and problem-solving. I m of the view that RLHF as insufficient to bridge the gap for AI to autonomously program itself in a truly reliable and creative way.

Human-Level General Intelligence Not Yet Achieved: Self-programming, especially at a level that could replace human programmers for complex tasks, would arguably require a form of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The LLMs such as ChatGPT, while impressive, is not a step towards true general intelligence. Therefore, if current AI isn't truly intelligent in a general sense, it's unlikely to possess the kind of autonomous, creative, and reliable problem-solving ability needed for genuine self-programming.

AI as a Tool vs. Autonomous Creator: The current state of art of AI , is a powerful tool that can assist programmers. AI can be excellent for code completion, suggesting code snippets, automating repetitive tasks, and even helping with debugging.

However, this is different from AI autonomously creating complex programs from scratch, defining its own programming goals, and independently innovating in software development. We need to see AI in the near future as remaining a tool used by human programmers, rather than replacing them entirely with self-programming systems.

In nutshell, Can LLM be truly self programming Entities ?. Not with the current paradigm of LLMs and not in the sense of truly autonomous, creative, and reliable self-programming for complex tasks.

Truly autonomous self-programming as requires a more fundamental shift in AI research and a move beyond the limitations of current pattern-matching approaches.
