Can Hypnosis Help My Relationship?
Noreen Cassidy Clinical Hypnotherapist and Mindset Coach
Finding your lifelong solution to Anxiety and helping you to achieve your goals.
The short answer is yes.
When I first became a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I didn't envisage being a 'Couples Therapist' and in effect I'm not, I help individuals with their stress related issues, and help them to regain their motivation and joy for life. However, what I've discovered, mainly from feedback from clients is that almost as a happy side effect of their recovery and progress, their relationships have improved.
Is this surprising? Not really. As well as changing our mindset, hypnosis can encourage the production of our natural happy hormones such as Serotonin, Dopamine and Oxytocin. These hormones decide who we fall in love with and whether we stay with them. This means hypnosis can help your relationship in two ways.
1.By changing your mindset to a more positive one which makes you nicer to live with.
2. By helping you to produce and have a nice steady flow of the happy hormones.
What Happens When Your Mindset Changes?
When you start to think in a more positive way you start to enjoy life more and see the joy in everything. Guess what? this makes you a nicer person to live with.
You will be calmer, less argumentative, and kinder. In most relationships if our partner treats us with kindness and respect, we treat them same way.
The Science Bit
Serotonin is the hormone responsible for our mood, digestion, and our circadian rhythm (body clock). It's keeps us nice and balanced and a lack of it is one of the main causes of depression. Did you know that your emotional brain can shut down the production of serotonin if it perceives that you are in danger? This is where hypnosis comes in, positive suggestion under hypnosis goes straight to your subconscious which prevents the shutdown of serotonin.
90% of serotonin is produced in the gut where it acts as a neurotransmitter that communicates via the enteric nervous system in the gut, it accesses body tissues by also entering the blood stream, a clever hormone! This also explains why we can suffer from IBS and other physical symptoms as a result of stress.
Dopamine is also known as the 'wow' hormone because we receive it in sudden bursts rather than a steady flow like serotonin. Even being out for a walk and seeing a bird or an animal that we don't see every day can give us a little burst of dopamine.
Dopamine is responsible for motivation and is part of the brain's reward system. We get a nice shot of dopamine when we anticipate doing something pleasurable like sex or eating a nice meal.
Oxytocin makes us fall in love and stay in love with the same person. This is the hormone that is stimulated when we feel a strong attraction to someone and the hormone that makes a mother fall in love with her new baby. It's produced as a result of gentle touch and the right kind of eye contact. Oxytocin also contributes to relieving stress and keeping us nice and calm.
