Can green discharge indicate a sexually transmitted disease?

Yes! Green discharge is frequently an indication of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The most common symptom of a sexually transmitted disease is green or yellowish-green vaginal discharge. Trichomoniasis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia are the most often found sexually transmitted diseases linked to green or yellow-green vaginal discharge.

Gonorrhea is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhaeae and is most frequent in teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 24. Even though gonorrhea symptoms are often hidden (asymptomatic), a change in the colour of the vaginal discharge is an important sign. Common gonorrhoea symptoms include a creamy or greenish vaginal discharge (even a light green discharge), lower abdomen ache, sensation of burning or pain during urination, frequent urination, painful sexual intercourse, spotting between periods, and anal itching and/or discomfort. Similar to gonorrhea, chlamydia is a bacterial infection that frequently causes no symptoms at all before causing difficulties later on. Chlamydia is also the most common STI induced by a bacteria. If you do show symptoms, one of them is the appearance of a foul-smelling vaginal discharge that is white, yellow, creamy, or even grey. Other Chlamydia symptoms are nearly identical to gonorrhoea symptoms.

Please visit a doctor and get tested for STDs if you observe any green or yellowish-green discharge. Your doctor may take a blood sample, a urine sample, and a swab of the affected area to determine if you have a STD. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that sexually transmitted infections frequently have no visible symptoms at all, so you should still be tested even if you don't have any symptoms at all.

If it is discovered that you have a STD, the treatment is relatively simple! Your doctor will give you a prescription for a course of antibiotics that can help to destroy the disease-causing bacteria in both the cases of gonorrhea and chlamydia. It's never a good idea to delay up treating an STD because doing so can lead to infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease, among other consequences. Additionally, it increases your chance of getting HIV/AIDS and spreading it to others. Because of this, it might be a good idea to speak with your doctor if you feel like you could be at risk of an STD after reading this article.
