Can Embattled Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori Survive? Clergy Abuse Victims Demand His Immediate Ouster
By Gary Gately, The Catholic Observer
Embattled?Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori?should be ousted immediately, clergy abuse victims’ advocates say.
Their demand comes after The Baltimore Sun reported that four high-ranking priest leaders in the?Archdiocese of Baltimore?who systematically covered up sexual abuse of children continue serving as pastors who celebrate Mass and as members of prominent Catholic institutions’ governing boards.
Lori, the advocates say, directed archdiocese attorneys to persuade a Baltimore judge to withhold the names of the priests, among?five high-ranking priests?who?covered up and minimized decades of child sexual abuse, from a scathing?Maryland Attorney General’s Office report?that excoriated the Church leaders for covering up decades of clergy’s sexual abuse of children.
The Sun’s investigation prompted victims’ advocates to?demand that the Church strip the priests of their rights to perform ministry in the Church?and that?Lori?be ousted for his complicity in allowing them to continue in the ministry.?
