Yahoo security breach of 2015 is not forgotten. The Uquifax data breach of 2017 remains as a fresh electronic scar in the IT lives of almost two third of the US citizens. The data scandal of Facebook and Cambridge Analytica connected to political gain in a general election is also fresh. Now Google+ private data have exposed to several third parties which is due to a software glitch. So data protection remains as a big challenge.
Aren't the Internet based IT service providers data brokers?
In all such data security breaches, the parent organization take a lot of time to admit the failure in user data protection. In case of Yahoo and Equifax data breaches, the CEOs were fired. We have seen Facebook CEO fumbling during the interrogation by the US congress. These are eye washes and don't do anything to improve the situation. The stolen private data are still in the hands of the data hackers and the data brokers.
Internet driven IT business arena remains a paradise of the data brokers and hackers
Google have discovered the data privacy problem in Google+ long ago. They have refused to disclose it fearing punishment by the data regulatory boards world wide. Now Alphabet's decision to shut down Google+ is an action of an escapist. Are they going to do anything to preserve the privacy of the user data? Do they foresee punitive measures from the EU General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR?
Can data harvesting be stopped by any means?
GDPR or more data regulation boards are required to exist in all nations world wide. But the data regulatory laws can't stop data brokering and data harvesting. The world needs a new type of Internet where the privacy of personal data will be preserved. This will have new Internet protocols and data structure. This will be a decentralized web what people call web 3.0.
Decentralized web may be an answer to the data breaches
A new Internet is coming, the Web 3.0 .. The creator of the World Wide Web or the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee, says about this dream at the 25th year anniversary of the World Wide Web. It will be a "Decentralized Web" where the data the users store or share in the Internet will be private and nobody can use these data for business without the permission from the users.
Once the "Decentralization of the Internet" is implemented, the big IT players can't play with our private data anymore
The "Reinventing the Internet" is not an easy task. Contributions from several quarters already started to pour in. There will be enough tweaking on the Internet protocols. The DNS will be decentralized. The web browsing will be encrypted and anonymous. The software system and the structure of the world wide web will be totally different. The new Internet will give back the power in the hands of the users to control their personal data.
This is a dream of the future. Are you curious about "Reinventing the Internet"? Please deep dive the present day Internet and find more on what people are doing towards developing the "New Internet". Let us join hands to achieving this "Decentralized Internet".

5 年Great and informative article, Debesh Choudhury, Ph.D. Thank you for focusing your article on an area that should concern everyone.
There is only one way to keep a secret; don't tell anyone or anything. In the not too distant future, brainwave harvesting may render this way obsolete. Metal skullcaps will be the new haute couture.

6 年I personally would like to see the U.S. adopt similar regulations like the GDPR.? Privacy concerns need to be put to the forefront.? Perhaps on-going credit monitoring should be included when we pay taxes?

6 年Thanks for sharing about internet 3.0.? I do wonder if it actually will be able to stop the hacking and acquiring of user data. It seems like history tells us criminals seem to find a way around security, no matter how strong we think it is. Will quantum computing be the achilles heel for security??
