??Can Dandelions Help Save Our Planet?

Hello solutions seekers! ?

This is just a small note to say thank you for reading The Solutionists.

In many ways, telling these stories and sharing them within our circles helps to elevate the work of young people who are fighting to make our world a better place.

As a one-woman band, it's been encouraging to see more and more people subscribe to the newsletter and reach out to share new stories and feedback about this publication.

The best part of my work is talking about change and telling stories from innovators who are making a difference. Feel inspired, stay informed, and be encouraged that there is positive change in our world, and it's not all doom and gloom.

Thank you for being solution seekers!

?? Making Tyres From Dandelions

Continental Tire is going to use dandelions to create the tyres of the future!

Together with partners like the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology, they are developing tyres made entirely from natural rubber sourced from dandelions! These tyres could be rolled out in the next five to ten years.

Natural rubber makes up about 10 to 30 percent of a car tire, and truck tires often contain even more. This rubber primarily comes from the rubber tree which grows in a specific region known as the "rubber belt" around the equator. As global demand for natural rubber is expected to increase in the coming years, meeting this demand is becoming more challenging due to various changes in our world.

But how many dandelions does it take to make one tyre?

California Says No To Plastic Waste ?

In California, the question “Paper or plastic?” at the checkout line is about to become a thing of the past! Thanks to a new law signed by the Governor, Gavin Newsom, all plastic shopping bags will be banned by 2026.

California had already banned thin plastic bags in supermarkets, but customers could still buy thicker plastic bags that were labeled reusable. Now, the state is taking a big step forward by phasing out all plastic bags altogether.

So, what happens if someone forgets their reusable bags? No problem! Shoppers will simply be asked if they want a paper one. It’s a fun and easy way to help the planet while shopping, and it’s already proving successful in other parts of the world.

Barcelona Powering EV's From Subway Energy

Passengers stepping off the trains in Bellvitge, a big working-class neighbourhood near Barcelona, might have no idea how cutting-edge the city’s subway system really is. Thanks to innovative technology similar to the regenerative braking used in hybrid and electric cars, the trains they ride are actually helping power the city!

IMG: TMB

Every time a train comes to a stop, the energy from the braking is turned into electricity! This power is sent through inverters and spread throughout the subway system. A third of it keeps the trains running, while the rest powers station lights, escalators, and an expanding network of EV chargers. It’s an efficient and eco-friendly way to use every bit of energy to keep the city moving - https://grist.org/transportation/barcelona-is-turning-subway-trains-into-power-stations/

?? Nutritious Prescription Anyone ?

One Medical Center in Boston has introduced a Preventive Food Pantry for their patients. The basement waiting room may look ordinary, with its rows of chairs and TV, but here, patients aren't just waiting for medical attention—they’re preparing to get a grocery prescription.

Instead of being led to an exam room, patients are guided to a pantry stocked with nutritious foods tailored to their health needs. Staff carefully select items based on each patient's condition—low-potassium foods for those with kidney issues, or whole grains for diabetic patients. Everyone leaves with fresh vegetables, fruits, and wholesome ingredients to help support their health from the inside out.

Doctors at Boston Medical Center understand that access to healthy food is just as important as medication in managing chronic conditions. By prescribing nutritious food, the hospital is not only treating illness but also empowering patients to take charge of their health in a sustainable, practical way.

Plastic Waste Boats & Pollution Awarness ??

Founded in 2016, the Flipflopi Project has turned plastic waste into innovative products like boats and furniture while addressing the island's growing plastic pollution problem. This island in Kenya, Lamu, has long struggled with plastic waste from both local sources and debris washed ashore. The project aims to tackle this issue head-on and raise awareness about its environmental impact.

Now, local residents are part of the solution, collecting plastic waste and selling it to Flipflopi. This initiative not only helps to clean the environment but also provides a source of income, supporting families and their children's education.
