Can creative courage unlock the urgent shift to a more beautiful world ?

Definately the most challenging podcast episode I've recorded.

Sometimes I’ve found it's easier to keep pretending stuff isn't happening, or just keep silent because I’ve learned that it’s too uncomfortable for others, or maybe it's not really my problem, or it's too complex so just ignore it.

But I do believe in the science, I do trust the signals that we’re getting from our planet and those already suffering, and I do believe that those of us in highly developed societies with privilege ( everyone on here I'm guessing) have a moral duty to step up at this moment in time. And I do believe our current political leaders aren’t going to do anything meaningful unless we the people are collaborating and demanding change in waves, a movement of movements, networks, sectors and communities.

The solutions to the climate and ecological crisis will require the most creative responses that humans have ever dreamed up at a scale never before. To have a chance to evolve to something life sustaining.

We need fast, joined up, radical collaborations based in ecological limits and scientific realities to in Joanna Macy’s words, get us through this ‘Great Turning’ - co-ordinated ‘Holding Actions’ to slow down the destruction and to protect what is left of our ecosystems and biodiversity and then an acceleration of ‘life sustaining systems and practices’  - a 'creative redesign' of the structures and systems that make up our societies - as Extinction Rebellion put it - this is not a drill.

There has been a ‘disturbance in the force’ of the UK advertising industry through the intervention of Extinction Rebellion, the youth climate strikers are now mobilising the adults to step up with them in September, and many creative businesses are starting to wake up and get involved. But we need much much more across multiple sectors and disciplines and for this to become a central part of ‘business as usual.’

We need a wave of creative energy stepping up this autumn. How beautiful would it be to see the incredible talent on LinkedIn getting stuck into this and really unlocking the potential for networked creative mobilisation - this is the biggest creative challenge of our time, but it's not a paid brief (currently), there’s no client and no awards.

Now is the time and we need everyone, because 'there are no passengers on spaceship earth, we are all crew.'

I’m also interested in how it might feel if we stopped pretending, united behind the science, and started getting on with it, we know enough to get going.

I think it could be beautiful. Scary, uncertain, complicated, difficult for sure, but I reckon it would also feel hugely energising to be co-creating our future.

Loads of ways into this through this episode and show notes - listen via Apple Podcast/Soundcloud/Spotify/Acast

Hit me up on any of this stuff

I guess if I had a word to describe the way we should lead and manage life on earth it would be “stewardship” - this is a theological concept which places humans in relation to the world as responsible for taking “care” of it. Implicit in this is that none of us own anything but are stewards of what sustains us and makes life meaningful. We can adopt this attitude now and use it to guide our choices about how we treat others, ourselves and the planet’s resources. We can do this wherever we are, whoever we are, right now.
