The answer is yes!
We don’t realize it because we’re surrounded by them. But our everyday devices have the potential to lift children out of harm’s way and bring generations a new shot at life.
?Computers Create Ripple Effects
?Think about what computers have allowed you to accomplish:
?·??????They helped you through school.
·??????Allowed you to meet remotely with teachers.
·??????Finish your school papers.
·??????Got you in college.
·??????Helped you graduate from college.
·??????Helped you find a job.
·??????Give you many ways to take care of your family.
·??????And fulfill your dreams.
Sadly, not everyone is so lucky to check boxes off this list. I bet that you have a computer at home. Most people we know on LinkedIn do.
But not everyone.
In fact, a part of the LinkedIn algorithm is designed to help people succeed who don’t typically get the chance. These are people from underserved communities. People who must hunt to find a computer with an internet connection, and then don’t necessarily have the self-confidence to realize the power that comes with it.
Imagine what your entire life would look like if you had never owned a computer. Imagine how much you would struggle if you never even had access to one. A computerless life is the norm for a shocking number of young people today.
?
How many people don’t have computers? A lot. According to Unicef, two-thirds of the world’s school-age children have no internet.??
And yet:
·??????We know that children who seize the opportunity to use computers (for skills and education) are more likely to realize success.
?·??????Computer literacy is close to language literacy—a necessity in the job market.
?·??????Studies show that students who use computers responsibly may have higher cognition. They can certainly access social networks and professional openings that would otherwise be closed and remote.??

?Our Kids Need More Computers
In my hometown of Cincinnati, about 50 percent of the kids are living below the poverty line. In all the US, about 40 percent of children live below the poverty line. This is tough. These kids need computers to help empower their lives and succeed.
What are we going to do to help them?
?I’ve seen too many headlines about our youth failing to succeed. I’m determined that a lack of computing power must not be a barrier to their success. Life is hard enough. I certainly had access to technology growing up—and still I struggled to succeed.?
My story starts when my business launched, igniting my desire to give back. I couldn’t afford it in the beginning, I didn’t have the means to donate devices. So, I tried to spread positivity. I mentored student groups and saw that what the underserved youth need is access to technology and remote learning, which opens them to the world.?
Finally, in 2019, I started gifting computers. Not gifting, really. These computers are?earned. The students who get these devices earn them by being outstanding in their school’s organizations. They are working their butts off. When I meet with these students and hear their stories, it brings tears to my eyes.
?I’ve learned that you don’t need to grow up in a war-torn country to have war-torn problems.
I met children who had to overcome hunger, poverty, homelessness, abuse and trouble with the law—situations that would leave you and me down, unable to reach for our dreams.
?It doesn’t stop them. After meeting all these kids, I wanted to give back.
By donating computers, we can change kids’ lives. Computers change their outlook on the world. They change a child’s future job prospects. How do I know? In the few years I’ve been giving computers to students, I’ve seen all these outcomes firsthand. The impact of device gifting drives me to do more.
That’s why I gave a TEDx talk.
What Life Saving Devices are Hiding in Your Drawers?
Consider:
How can the devices that you own, that are forgotten in drawers and closets, empower our youth? Trust me—computers that we take for granted, that we don’t even need, can literally save the lives of children at risk and give them access to a better life for the first time.
My passion is for all children to have the means to succeed, just like I did. Who needs this most? The children who are below the poverty line and underprivileged.
Please. Donate a device.
Imagine the positive impact that you can have with such a simple act of kindness.
