Can BlockChain solve Delhi Stubble Burning issue
I came back to Delhi after 5 years and was deeply saddened by seeing the impact of pollution. A few days were so bad that schools had to close and kids had to stay indoors.
Looking at different reports a big contributor to increased pollution levels was stubble burning. While machines were available to deal with stubble still farmers had to burn it because these machines were expensive and not readily available.
Can we prevent this from happening this time? Can we prepare and proactively address this issue for later this year? Can we leverage technology to solve this problem?
Why not? Blockchain can solve this problem. IndiaChain has been in news for quite long, There have been news articles which indicates some that there is already an appetite to use and implement it for the agricultural purpose like
- Land records
- Supply chain management
- Benefits distributions
- Electricity distributions etc.
Various organizations and companies have been working to develop and roll out low-cost stubble machines however still they are out of reach from farmers. There are an additional cost and overhead that farmers are not quite ready for and the subsidiaries not often reach ground levels.
With a careful and thought through implementation there can be an efficient rental distribution of these machines, which can be governed by streamlined record keeping and efficient rental contracts.
This can bring a transformative impact in the agricultural sector and has the potential in creating a building an effective supply chain management much beyond these machines. This digitization can be extended to capture information about the quality of land, what crops are grown, kinds of fertilizers that are used and are optimal, etc.
Crypto Currencies and Blockchain go hand in hand. Although they have been banned in India due to issues related to tax evasion and lack of regulators however if reconsidered it can create a mechanism wherein small contributions from the wider community can help fund in buying these machines.
Thoughts? Will share more details in next post
What is Blockchain – In simple words, it is a decentralized digital ledger maintained by a network of computers. It is chaining of records in which no data can be modified by any single person without everyone agreeing to the modification. It also offers complete transparency and the ability to verify transactions by all members of the network.

5 年It depends on how we want to educate our farmers. If we reward them or encourage them for the same for a positive step and make them understand that a world will be a better place to live in with technology! Then why not! At least we all will be part in this and government can help all of us in great deal directly or indirectly for us to work together. Our kids deserve this!

5 年The problem statement in my opinion is cost effectiveness of the solutions available to farmers. The records of land are available with tehsildar and govt after every kharif and rabi sowing season declares the land under cultivation for respective crop. Effective mobilisation of resources at ground level using blockchain could be effective if we have effective usage of these techs/ solutions at ground level...farmers are not willing to use tech and these solutions because of man power and timing involved in implementation of these solutions comparing to burning....but still one could give a try to build any solution based on blockchain to stop pollution.
