Our guest speaker, Roger Miles will deal with the question, "Can Bad Behaviours Be Prevented?"?

How people perceive risk and make decisions under uncertainty? Understanding the answer to this question will help ?boards to overcome design weaknesses in risk control and governance.

Roger is usually hired "to help companies identify and fix any ill-conceived rules and controls; and to reverse?unwanted consequences that may have arisen where controls have been previously introduced without due thought."

He contrasts expert and lay perceptions of risk, identify and overcome bias, and highlight any line functions where subcultures have ‘legitimised misconduct’.

By helping people at all levels in the organisation adopt a ‘working risk-aware’ approach, all , by adopting simple, practical and motivating steps, he is encourages all to draw on their diverse thinking and instinct to challenge, improving resilience, and make better decisions.

Working with professional bodies in finance and other sectors, he is continuing to develop new education initiatives for exemplary management of Conduct, Culture Audit and Reputation Risk.

Hid approach has been developed during a pretty unique career during which he has been "in the thick of it" as industry insider. He has also been involved in, and continues to engage in, sector-wide research collaboration. He works with function leaders in Risk, Conduct, Culture, Compliance and HR, in the UK and internationally - to develop and promote more reliable indicators, predictors and reporting dashboards.

Culture was identified as a major risk factor that contributed greatly to the Global Banking Crisis. Having been in that sector he was able to develop a full understanding of what that means in practice, and what lessons needed to be learned. But many of the lessons apply to all other sectors.

Roger publishes serial commentaries on risk culture (for?Reuters,?Financial Times,?Berkeley Research?and?others) and best practice guidelines for professional bodies in the finance and professional services sectors. He co-edits the Encyclopaedia of key psychology terms for the Behavioural Economics Guides (LSE).

His books?Conduct Risk Management: A Behavioural Approach?(2017) and?Culture Audit in Financial Services?(2021) are popular, with reviews calling them "timely, fascinating and enjoyable"; "a must-have for financial services leaders and regulators"; "clear, current, engaging and - who'd have expected this? - frequently entertaining".

Today Roger is Head of Faculty at UK Finance's Academy for Conduct and Culture; a research associate of Cambridge University (Centre for Science and Policy); and postdoctoral graduate of King’s College London (Hazards & Risk Research Group).

The event on Monday is the second in the "The Global Governance and Risk Crisis" Trilogy of Dialogues

Roger will take part in a moderated dialogue with Elliot Schreiber, "The Yin & Yang of Reputation Management: Eight Principles for Strategic Stakeholder Value Creation and Risk Management" is available on Amazon.?
