Can Australia be self sufficient? Why not?

I do not see any reason why such a vast country continent country Australia being rich in all the natural resources has not been able to be self sufficient so far and are we that much dependant on outside forces including security and defence, ordinary consumer goods, food supply, manufacturing goods and what not to such an extent that we are constrained to make any decision to be self sufficient or any decision that could even lead us to that direction.

It is very unfortunate that we have come to such a pass that we need to sell our such resources like land not only to foreign nationals but foreign nations that do impinge on our sovereignty.

We have become too indulgent and complacent that we can not see beyond our nose.

I heard today treasurer Joe Hockey in NSW Council meeting talking about living within means but I do not see any serious effort in that direction.

We lack totally manufacturing of any kind worth the name. We have just become merely a tradies country without even any trade supplies. For all the nuts and bolts that do not need a high-tech facilities we depend on China.

It is a pity that we even o get our national flags to flash our pride at support events or atop state buildings we look to China.

We seem to have just become a colony of China
