On Saturday, April 20, 2024, it was my great honor and distinct privilege to join a multinational TEAM of EXPERTS, participating in the Fiscal Forum titled: “Leveraging Fiscal Rules and Frameworks to Navigate Today's Fiscal Challenges.”
?The high-level panel discussion on Saturday, April 20, 2024, was the fourteenth session of the IMF Fiscal Forum. The discussion covered cross-country experiences and challenges in designing and implementing rule-based fiscal frameworks. At this juncture, large fiscal deficits and the surge in public debt seen in many parts of the world pose fiscal risks. These are compounded by the growing budgetary pressures from climate, aging, and meeting sustainable development goals.

On April 11, we kicked things off with the Spring Meetings opening press conference, where World Bank Group President Ajay Banga talked to international journalists about critical global challenges. During the event, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga announced an ambitious plan that will support countries in delivering quality, affordable health services to 1.5 billion people by 2030.

" Dear Vanel, In today’s briefing, we spotlight Kristalina Georgieva’s Global Policy Agenda, a debate on artificial intelligence and the global economy, a partnership for public finance, and look at the regional outlooks for Asia and the Middle East." The International Monetary Fund (IMF), Managing Manager, Kristalina Georgieva outlined priorities:
1) After four years of crises, Kristalina Georgieva said that the world economy would be tested again amid the weakest medium-term growth prospects for decades and deepening divergences between richer and poorer nations.
2) The IMF managing director underscored the need to rebuild buffers, revive medium-term growth and renew the Fund’s commitment to ensures its policies, lending and governance remained fit for purpose in her Global Policy Agenda.
3) Kristalina Georgieva, who last week was selected to serve a second term as managing director, pointed to a spike in global debt to 93 percent of GDP and higher interest payments. Fiscal capacity is exhausted in most countries and that is dangerous. “In a world where crises keep coming, countries must urgently build fiscal resilience to be prepared for the next shock.”
